Many of you have asked about mastery of concepts with baby bins.  Aubrey definitely does not identify all of her colors consistently yet, but after all of our color themed baby bins she is using color word more and trying to label colors when asked. The goal with baby bins is not 100% mastery, instead I focus on learning through play, exposure to new concepts, and building vocabulary.

Rainbow Read Aloud:

What Makes a Rainbow? by Betsy Schwartz is a fun interactive book that reviews all of the colors of the rainbow.  As you turn each page a new colored ribbon magically appears to form a rainbow.  The last page has a pop up rainbow surprise as well making this book a great choice for holding little ones attention while reviewing each color. 

Rainbow Themed Sensory Bin:

Included in this bin:

Play ideas for this bin:
1. Scoop dump and play using various fine motor tools
2. Sort cereal by color into matching cups.
3. Build a rainbow by matching colors on the rainbow mat.

Rainbow Scarf Stuffing:

We love baby wipe containers for stuffing items because
1: We always seem to have 10 laying around. and
 2: They hold up to the abuse of a baby/toddler really well. 
This week I pulled out our rainbow scarves and placed them in the container in rainbow order with purple at the bottom.  Aubrey reached in to pull out each color and we practiced naming each one. Then she chose scarves to stuff back in and we practiced saying the color names again.

Rainbow Finger Paint:

Sometimes simple activities are best, so I figured a little finger painting would be a great way to have fun with all of our rainbow colors. Aubrey is a painting pro now, so I chose to use our regular tempera paints for bright colors. If you have a baby that still puts everything in their mouth try making simple yogurt paint by mixing greek yogurt with food coloring for each color.

Rainbow Soap Sensory Bath:

  I’ll admit our little Aubrey actually doesn’t love bath time like many kids her age, but this rainbow soap sensory bath was so much fun, she couldn’t resist jumping right in.  To prepare the bath, I brought our hand mixer up to our bathroom with a large bowl and some liquid watercolors. (You could also use food coloring if your baby is going to try eating the bubbles) I squeezed about 2 tablespoons dish soap into the bowl and mixed it with about 1/4 cup of water and a few drops of liquid watercolors. (Just keep mixing for a few minutes until you get a big fluffy bowl of foam.) Then I scooped it up in my hands and placed it in the bathtub. I repeated with each color before letting Aubrey jump in so we could start out with separated colors before she mixed and swirled them all together.

Rainbow Bubble Wrap Painting:

We finished up our color themed baby bins with this mess free painting activity is brought to you by bubble wrap.  Aubrey kind of has an obsession with popping the bubbles (I mean I kind of do too…) so I saved a few pieces for this fun project. ….. Here’s what we did: Fold a large rectangle of bubble wrap in half and tape the sides with packing tape to create an envelope big enough to fit a piece of paper. Squirt tempera paint onto a sheet of paper. I made a rainbow, but you could use any colors you want and just make blobs all over the paper for mixing. Slide the paper carefully into the bubble wrap envelope trying not to squish the paint too much. Tape the top of the envelope shut with more packing tape. (Lots of packing tape if your little one is crazy about popping those bubbles like mine!) Let your kiddo go to town popping bubbles and squishing the paint. All with no mess! Cut the sides of the bubble wrap open and peel it off the paper. Let the paint dry and display your beautiful art!

Gray Read Aloud:

One Gray Mouse by Katherine Burton was a great book for our baby bins because it not only reviewed the colors, but also focused on counting and animals.  Never too early to start embedding that math vocabulary!

Gray Sensory Bin:

Gray Shredded Paper

Play ideas for this bin:
1. Find the gray animals.
2. Make pretend cookies.
3. Put on the silver jewelry.

Gray Poky Play:

We’ve done the pipe cleaner and strainer activity before, but for our gray theme I pulled out just the silver pipe cleaners and silver colander. Aubrey worked on building fine motor skills by poking the silver pipe cleaners into the strainer. I cut the pipe cleaners in half so they were a bit easier to poke through without bending. Easy easy quiet activity.

Mouse Paint in a Bag:

For this baby safe painting activity, I drew a mouse outline on a ziplock bag then added a few drops of white and black paint. Then, I sealed it up for some fun no mess and no stress painting. Aubrey used her fingers, sponges and foam brushes to smush the paint around and mix it together to make gray.

Gray Foil Painting:

For some more color mixing, I made a batch of white and black yogurt finger paint. (To make this taste safe paint, mix Greek yogurt with food coloring.) We used it to paint on aluminum foil. Aubrey used various brushes and even her fingers to mix and create fun textures.

Gray Color Collage:

At the end of each color week we are making a color collage that I will put together in a book for Aubrey to flip through.   To make the gray book page, I first cut out a large rectangle from the center of 2 pieces of gray cardstock. Then I cut two pieces of contact paper that were slightly bigger than the gray rectangles.     I took the backing off of one piece of contact paper and stuck one rectangle on it.  Then I gave Aubrey a tray full of gray pictures, stickers, sequins, and feathers to create a gray collage.   

After she was finished, I glued the second gray rectangle on top of the first and pressed the remaining piece of contact paper over the top to seal the collage inside. Next, I trimmed the excess contact paper around the rectangle.  I hole punched the top corner and added it to a small metal ring with our red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, and white collage pages to form a unique color flip book.

White Rabbit’s Color Book by Alan Baker was the perfect white themed book for our baby bins. It was great for reviewing the colors we have learned so far and introducing color mixing.

White Sensory Bin:

Play ideas for this bin:

1. Find the white vehicles and drive them around.

Stuff the Snowman:

For this activity, we worked on building fine motor skills by stuffing mini marshmallows into an empty water bottle that I decorated to look like a snowman. Super simple to prep just use a little hot glue, buttons, ribbon, googly eyes and felt.  Aubrey equally enjoyed shaking the bottle at the end to get all of the marshmallows back out.

Rabbit Paint in a Bag:

For this baby safe painting activity, I put a gray rabbit outline in a ziplock bag with a few drops of white paint. Then I sealed it up for some fun no mess and no stress painting. Before the paint dried I carefully opened the bag and peeled it away from the top to allow it to dry.

White Frosting Play Dough:

This white frosting dough is my absolute favorite! Just mix white frosting and powdered sugar until you get the softest smoothest play dough ever. I don’t even measure it, just keep adding sugar until it’s no longer sticky. It’s seriously a fluffy cloud of awesome. Trust me your kids will be begging to play with it more than slime…okay maybe not that much, but you will enjoy a few minutes to yourself while they explore with this fluffy white taste safe play dough.
Here is what I included on our tray: angel and snowman cookie cutters, cut up pipe cleaners, and foam snowflakes

Frosting Playdough Recipe: (But you really can just wing it)
In a stand mixer, mix 1 cup white funfetti frosting and 3 cups of powdered sugar. That’s it! If it’s too sticky add more powdered sugar.Too dry? Add more frosting. Sooooo easy and a great texture.

White Color Collage:

  At the end of each color week we are making a color collage that I will put together in a book for Aubrey to flip through.

Black Read Aloud:

Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews has been a favorite of mine for a while.  I always used it as a counting book in kindergarten, but the board book version made a great black themed book for our baby bins. I like that it will also introduce counting to Aubrey at the same time.

 Black Sensory Bin:

Black Beans
Spider Rings

Play ideas for this bin:
1. Put together a black square puzzle.

2. Find all of the spider rings.
3. Find all of the bats and count them.
4. Find all of the animals.
5. Use the felt spiders to act out the song “There’s a Spider in the Floor.”
6. Play and scoop the beans to make a giant mess.

Stuff the Bottle:

For this activity, we worked on building fine motor skills by stuffing black pom poms, cut up straws, and foam rectangles into an empty water bottle. Super simple to prep and you could really use any small black items you have on hand.  Aubrey equally enjoyed shaking the bottle at the end to get all of the items back out.

Ten Black Dots Sensory Bag:

  To make this easy Ten Black Dots inspired sensory bag start by filling a resealable bag with clear hair gel. Add black glitter and black foam circles. Seal bag, then squish the circles around, count and play. Also Madelynn (4 yo) totally called me out on the fact that there were more than 10 in our bag, so apparently I should have counted them first before adding them to the bag.

Zebra Marble Painting:

For a little painting fun, we turned these horses into zebras.  I taped the outline inside a shallow box then dropped in a marble and a few blobs of black paint.  Aubrey shook the box back and forth to roll the marbles all around. If you are worried about flying marbles covered in paint, you may want to use a box with a lid. Trust me, it’s bound to happen. I may or may not have been nailed in the face with a paint soaked marble while creating these cuties…  Our box didn’t have a lid so my last minute solution was covering the box with press and seal.

Black Color Collage:

Brown Read Aloud:

  Our brown read aloud was a no brainer. I chose Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? because of the title, but also because it was a great review of all the colors.  I used the last page to point to each animal and reinforce the color words with Aubrey.  The only color she knows 100% of the time is pink, but she is starting to say other color words so I know they are starting to sink in a bit.

Play ideas for this bin:
1. Put together a brown pentagon puzzle card.

3. Find all of the food. Feed it to Mrs. Potato Head.
4. Find all of the animals.
5. Use the blocks to build towers.
6. Put on an animal puppet show.

Brown Bear Sticky Window Puzzles:

To prep this fun fine motor activity, I printed pictures of the animals from the book then sliced each one in half.  Then I taped contact paper to a sunny window sticky side out. Aubrey chose a piece then tried to find the matching half.  Using the sticky paper made it easier for her to match the pieces together and hold them in place instead of just matching them on the table or floor which can be frustrating for her when the slide around.

Chocolate Bear Painting:

For this baby safe painting activity, I made chocolate paint by mixing cocoa powder with water.  It was seriously so easy to make! I added water until it reached a paint like consistency.
After the paint was all mixed up I put a few scoops in a plastic dish and Aubrey used a brush to paint a bear printable brown. The paint smelled AMAZING, but because it was unsweetened cocoa powder it definitely didn’t taste yummy which was good for discouraging tasting.

Pigs in Mud Sensory Bin:

Aubrey is still not crazy about getting messy, so i tried to mix both messy and clean play together with this pigs in mud bin. To make the mud I again mixed together cocoa powder and water in a large bin until it made a mud like consistency.  Then I added a few fruit cups filled with water and some plastic pigs. Aubrey washed the pigs and dumped and poured the cups of water.

If Everything Were Pink by Hannah Eliot is a silly book celebrating all the shades of pink from ballet pink, to rose pink and everything in between. The illustrations had my girls cracking up and learning new vocabulary at the same time with the labeled items on each page.

Pink Sensory Bin:

Play ideas for this bin:

1. Put together a pink heart puzzle card.
2. Find all of the princesses.
3. Find all of the jewelry and play dress up.
4. Find all of the animals.
5. Find all of the food, and feed it to the piggies.
6. Roll, toss, kick and play with the balls.

Pink Heart Threading:

To prep this fun fine motor bin, I started with a bunch of pink felt and foam hearts. Next, I punched a hole in the center of the foam hearts with a regular hole punch and cut a slit in the felt hearts with scissors. Then, I added a few pink paper straws and pipe cleaners. Aubrey needed no direction, she knew just what to do and got bust poking the hearts and threading them on the straws and pipe cleaners. This was a perfect quiet activity and is now in a zipper pouch in our diaper bag for future use at restaurants and doctors offices to tame the emerging toddler crazy.

Pink Heart Stamping:

For this baby safe painting activity, I made yogurt paint by mixing plain greek yogurt with magenta food coloring.  I wanted the color nice and dark since I was having aubrey paint on pink paper too so I added lots of food coloring, but if you don’t want it to stain your little ones hands feel free to add just a little!
After the paint was all mixed up I put a few scoops in a plastic dish with sponges that I cut into heart shapes.  I demonstrated the process of dipping and stamping, then Aubrey took over squishing and stamping hearts all over the page. Of course in the end the entire page ended up covered in pink, but  this paint isn’t really made to be stored anyways, so plan to toss the pages after admiring your little one’s work.

Pink Bubble Sensory Bin:

Aubrey LOVES water play, so this week I created a pink bubble bin with water, a drop of pink food coloring, and lots of dish soap.  I put the dish soap and food coloring in our bin first then ran warm water into bin to fill it up and make bubbles at the same time. I added in a few pink silicone cupcake liners, bowls, cups and whisks for mixing, pouring an pretending.

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson is such a classic and made the perfect purple themed story to kick off our week.  Harold is an imaginative little boy who uses his purple crayon to draw himself an entire adventure from beginning to end.

Purple Coloring Tray:

Inspired by our friend Harold, I gathered all of the purple coloring tools I could find.  Then I printed a page for Aubrey to color stamp and explore.

Purple Paint in a Bag:

Blue Theme Play Dough Tray:

For this activity, we worked on building fine motor strength. I gave Aubrey a tray with blue play dough, cookie cutters, gems, straws, sticks, and pouch lids. She used all of the different pieces to play stamp, squish and explore.

Blue Foam and Ice Play:

For this activity I sprayed blue foam soap on our clear tray then added blue star and regular ice cubes. Then Aubrey squished and explored.  We discovered she kind of hates the messy feeling though so this tray didn’t last long unfortunately.  Luckily my almost 4 year old was all about the mess so she got to play and explore too!

Little Blue Truck Bin:

Our next activity went along with our Little Blue Truck story for the week. First, I set it up with real mud but just like our last activity Aubrey really hated being messy and refused to play. So this was round 2 made with shredded brown paper. I added a little blue truck, farm animals, a frog and a dump truck and it was the perfect compromise, lots of fun without the mess.

Blue Color Collage:

At the end of each color week we are making a color collage that I will put together in a book for Aubrey to flip through.

To make the blue book page, I first cut out a large rectangle from the center of 2 pieces of blue cardstock. Then I cut two pieces of contact paper that were slightly bigger than the blue rectangles.

I took the backing off of one piece of contact paper and stuck one rectangle on it.  Then I gave Aubrey a tray full of blue pictures, stickers, sequins, and feathers to create a blue collage.

After she was finished, I glued the second blue rectangle on top of the first and pressed the remaining piece of contact paper over the top to seal the collage inside. Next, I trimmed the excess contact paper around the rectangle.  I hole punched the top corner and add it to a small metal ring with our red, orange, and yellow, and green collage pages to form a unique color flip book.

Green Read Aloud:

  I have always loved the books in the “Peas” series so I knew Little Green Peas: A Big Book of Colors by Keith Baker would be perfect for our green theme. The little green peas go on a rainbow adventure in this book visiting each color, so it is a great review of the colors we’ve focused on so far as well.

Green Sensory Bin:

Blocks
Dinosaurs
Turtle
Trees (from our train set)
Shamrock Necklaces
Play Food (peas, grapes, peppers, limes, cucumbers, etc.)
Green Puzzle Card
Green Flashcards
Green Book

Play ideas for this bin:

1. Find all of the dinosaurs and giant turtle.

2. Put together the green semi circle puzzle card.

3. Find all of the food, and feed it to mommy.

4. Build a dinosaur house with blocks.

5. Read the small green board book.

Green Theme Poky Play:

  For this activity, we worked on building fine motor strength. I gave Aubrey a block of floral foam, green pipe cleaners and large/small green popsicle sticks and she went to town poking them into the foam. I placed everything in a bin full of green shredded paper to contain it all.  Aubrey also decided it was fun to hide the sticks in the paper and play peek a boo with them.

Little Green Peas Sticker Pictures:

Our next activity went along with our Little Green Peas story for the week. I gave Aubrey paper, green crayons, and lots of green dot stickers for little green peas.  She is still having trouble peeling stickers independently so I peeled them and stuck them to the edge of our clear tray for her to grab so she could be more independent in her artwork.

Green Theme Water Play:

  Aubrey LOVES playing in water, after she had so much fun with last week’s yellow themed water bin, I knew I had to add another one this week. I filled our bin with warm water, then added frogs, lily pads (cut from foam sheets), cups and bowls. Aubrey had a great time dumping, splashing, exploring and getting everything wet. I laid a few towels down first, but it’s safe to say everything was soaked by the time she was done.

Yellow Read Aloud:

Aubrey has a tough time sitting for longer stories unless they are super engaging or interactive with flaps, touchable parts, or sounds so this week I was on the hunt for a shorter board book that would hold her attention. I found this adorable book called Yellow Copter by Kersten Hamilton.  In this story a little yellow helicopter saves the day when a teacher gets stuck at the top of a ferris wheel. Great for all little vehicle lovers. And if you want more color themed books check out Red Truck and Blue Boat in the same series.

Yellow Sensory Bin:

 Vehicles and Signs
Toy Sun Play Food (bananas, lemons, and corn)

Play ideas for this bin:
1. Find all of the ducks
2. Put together the yellow star puzzle card
3. Find all of the food, and feed it to mommy
4. Build a cage for the giraffe with blocks

MORE Yellow Sensory Bin:

  If you’re feeling brave, add yellow lemon scented rice for scooping, dumping and playing with construction vehicles. Just watch your littles closely so they don’t try to eat the rice. And be ready with a hand vac, because you will likely have a bit of a mess to clean up!

Taste Safe Sun Painting:

For this activity, I printed a sun outline and mixed up a batch of the easiest cornstarch paint ever. To make this taste safe (but not so yummy) paint, mix cornstarch with water. I don’t actually measure it at all! I just put a scoop of cornstarch in a bowl and add warm water slowly, mixing often until I reach the consistency I’m going for. Not too watery but not so stiff you can’t stir it, then add yellow food coloring.  Make sure to stir the paint often while using as it may settle at the bottom of the bowl. And of course because the paint was taste safe Aubrey was a little angel  and didn’t try to taste it once.

Yellow Star Stamping:

We used the same paint again for this stamping activity. I cut star shapes from sponges and added a few star cookie cutters. Because the paint is quite thin, the sponges definitely worked better than the cookie cutter, but Aubrey had fun experimenting with both.

Yellow Theme Water Play:

Aubrey LOVES playing in water, so now that it’s getting cooler outside we brought our water play indoors this week with a yellow themed water bin. I filled our bin with warm water, then added rubber ducks, bowls, cups, spoons, and ball pit balls. Aubrey scooped, dumped, stirred and played for a glorious 20 minutes of quiet. I laid a few towels down first, but it’s safe to say everything was soaked by the time she was done.
