Light Table Turkeys:

Aubrey started Thanksgiving week learning about shapes, colors, counting and symmetry with this turkey building activity. I printed a turkey body and taped it to our clear tray on top of a light pad (aka our cheaper version of a light table). Then I gave her a bin full of translucent pattern blocks to create feathers for the turkey. As she played we were able to incorporate so many different skills. We talked about the colors and shapes she used, practiced counting the number of blocks, sorted colors, tried to make patterns, and discussed symmetry.

Turkey Dot Stamp Page:

Next, we used our Do A Dot Art! Markers for fine motor practice. Aubrey focused on placing one dot in each circle on the turkey. This helps her build one to one correspondence for counting as well.

Turkey Feather Sticker Sort:

Peeling stickers is a great fine motor skill (especially for long car rides and restaurants!). For this sorting activity I printed colored feathers, then gave Aubrey small dot stickers to sort, match and cover each feather.

Turkey Feather Number Order:

For our next fine motor activity, Aubrey worked with pinching clothespins. She clipped the number feathers in order around the turkey body starting on the left side and working all the way around the body.

Marble Paint Feathers:

For our last fine motor activity Aubrey created this marble paint turkey. First, she painted a paper plate brown. Next, I covered the bottom of a shallow tray with shaving cream. Then, I added a few drops of liquid watercolor. Aubrey used a paintbrush to swirl the colors together then gently stamped 2 feather pages on top of the shaving cream. I helped her use a popsicle stick to scrape off the excess cream.
After those dried, Aubrey cut out the feathers and face pieces, glued the cut outs to the face, and attached the feathers behind the paper plate.

Thanksgiving Food Sort:

For our first gross motor activity we focused on sorting by color.  I set up bins with colored turkey labels on each one. Then I gave Aubrey a bin full of different colored play food and she ran each one across the room to feed each turkey the correct color.

Turkey Hokey Pokey:

We love a good you tube kids song around here, so when I searched for Thanksgiving songs and found this adorable Turkey Hokey Pokey video, I knew we had to use it this week. Aubrey was cracking up as she put her turkey wings, drumstick, etc in and out.

Musical Feathers:

This was another favorite activity of Aubrey’s.  I printed feathers with numbers 1-10 on them, then laid them out in a circle.  I put on some music and had her dance around stepping on each feather.  Then I stopped the music and had her pick up a number and try to identify it.  

Turkey Toss:

I found this cute fall tree door decoration at the craft store and thought it would be a fun way to practice color identification. I taped the tree to our door then added the colored leaves. Aubrey chose a colored feather card, identified the color, then tried to toss the turkey at the correct color leaf. Actually hitting the correct color was pretty difficult, but she loved throwing our stuffed turkey over and over again trying to hit the right leaf!

Turkey Wobble:

Okay I couldn’t resist one more fun video/song for our Thanksgiving theme. If you’ve never heard of Go Noodle or Koo Koo Kangaroo, you should just stop what you’re doing and go check them out right now. They have loads of awesome videos to get your kids dancing, moving, and having a great time. One of my favorite videos of theirs is the Turkey Wobble. It’s no secret my girls love learning new dance routines so this one was so fun for them. And its pretty hysterical to watch!

Thanksgiving Snacks:

Donut Hole Turkeys: For these yummy treats, we pushed 5 pieces of candy corn into the top of a donut hole for feathers and 2 pretzel sticks into the bottom for legs. Then we stuck 2 candy eyes, ½ an orange Reese’s pieces, and a piece of red gummy candy on the front of the donut hole with a dab of icing for the turkey face.

Turkey Pretzel Bites: To make these little turkey bites, I melted a few pieces of chocolate for 15-30 seconds then poured the chocolate onto pretzels (on wax paper) to fill centers. After the chocolate set a bit, we added candy corn feathers, candy eyes and Reese’s pieces.

Kix Corn on the Cob: This snack was easy peasy! I taped the pointy end of an icing bag down a few inches. Aubrey helped fill the bag with Kix cereal. Then I secured the bottom with a twist tie. Finally I wrapped the bag with a square of tissue paper and secured with another twist tie. This was a great snack to take on the go!

Rice Cake Turkey: This easy turkey was made with a mini rice cake, veggie straws for feathers, 2 pretzel stick legs, 2 candy eyes, ½ an orange Reese’s pieces, and a piece of red gummy candy on the rice cake for the turkey face.

Turkey Sandwich: This cute little turkey was my favorite for our last day of Thanksgiving week. I helped Aubrey skewer beef sticks and cheese cubes to make 6 feathers. Then we pushed the feathers into the side of an Uncrustable sandwich. Last we added candy eyes, a triangle of cheese and a red pepper to the top of the sandwich for the turkey face.

Fine Motor All About Me Activities for Tot School

Tear and Stick Names:

Aubrey started all about me week focusing on her own name. She is still working on recognizing all of the letters in her name, so for some fine motor practice she worked on tearing paper and gluing it in the letter outlines. This was much more challenging than I thought it would be so I ended up ripping a lot of the pieces smaller for her while she worked on picking up and gluing them one at a time. Lots of new skills went into this activity!

Roll and Paint Body:

Next we worked on identifying the parts of our body.  I printed a body outline and color/body part dice.  Aubrey rolled the two dice, then used watercolor paints to paint that body part the correct color.

Emotion Play Dough Mats:

This week we also learned about our emotions with this play dough mat.  Aubrey used the pictures at the top as models to create lots of different emotions and use new vocabulary to describe how her person was feeling.

Shape Family Puppets:

Finally we learned about our families, so we created the members of our family as shape puppets!  Aubrey used foam sticker shapes to create people by sticking them onto a craft stick.  I helped her use markers to draw a face and details and glue to add yarn, buttons, etc. for hair and other details.

Build a Home:

Another family activity we did was building houses for our families.  We started with family counters and built a little family.  Then Aubrey used fine motor tweezers to grab blocks and build each family a house.  This was great for strengthening her grasp as the blocks were a bit slippery and tough to hold on to.

Gross Motor All About Me Activities for Tot School

Sort the Hands:

I love gross motor activities for this age because they always seems to keep Aubrey interested for longer periods of time. After reading The Skin You Live In By Michael Tyler, I printed hands in different colors, dumped them on the floor and labeled a few baskets.  We took turns running back and forth with one hand at a time and dropping it in the right basket. Super easy set up and her big sister even joined in too!

Color Hokey Pokey:

Next to practice our body parts, we played the hokey pokey.  To switch it up a bit I tied a different colored rainbow scarf on each part of the body (hand, foot, tummy, and head.) Then I played the hokey pokey song and instead of saying “right hand, left hand, etc.” I said “orange hand, red hand, etc.” This made it easier to identify parts, and added a little extra fun for Aubrey as she waved the scarves around.

Feelings Face Hop:

We brought our next gross motor game outside to practice identifying feelings.  I drew faces with different emotions on the ground with sidewalk chalk. Then I called out an emotion for Aubrey to run to. When she got there she had to act out that emotion. After playing that way for a while I had her hop from face to face and name each emotion along the way.

Color Family Trip:

This color family trip activity was such a fun way to practice sorting by color and identifying family members all while getting some energy out. Using washi tape in rainbow colors, I created roads on the floor with a mixture of straight and zig zag lines. Then I taped a matching colored house at the end of each color road and filled a bin with colored family counters.  Aubrey had to find all of the family members of one color, load them into a toy truck, then follow that color road to deliver them to the correct house.

Race and Wipe Name:

For one more name activity we played this race and wipe game.  I wrote the letters in Aubrey’s name on our sliding glass window with dry erase markers. (I started with just 2 letters multiple times, then we worked up to more.) Aubrey stood back a few feet, and I called out a letter. With an eraser in hand, she ran to the window to erase the letter, then ran back.

All About Me Snack Ideas for Tot School

Pancake Faces – First make a batch of large circle shaped pancakes. (Use a store bought mix, or your own favorite recipe.) Fill a small tray or cupcake tin with cut up bananas, strawberries, blueberries, clementines, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, etc. Use pieces to create pancake faces.

All About Me Cookie –  Make a batch of your favorite sugar cookie dough or use store bought mix/ready made dough. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into people with cookie cutters. Bake, cool completely, and decorate with frosting, sprinkles, choc chips, jelly, and candy eyes.

Feelings Toast – Toast a slice of bread. Spread with peanut butter. Add candy eyes and chocolate chips. Put jelly in a decorator bag or Ziploc with a small corner cut off. Use jelly to create mouths, eyebrows, etc. to show different feelings.

Snack Family – Use various types of crackers, pretzel sticks, cheese, cheerios, mini marshmallows, and jelly to create all of the members of your family. Put jelly in a decorator bag or Ziploc with a small corner cut off to use for adding small details and/or writing names. 

Veggie Family – Cut up cucumbers, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese. Use veggies and cheese to build family members on an empty plate.

 Pumpkin Building:

Madelynn loved stacking, poking (and eating) these little jelly pumpkins. I encouraged her to make 2D shapes and 3D structures as well as to see how tall of a tower she could make.

Pumpkin Play Dough:

I found these pumpkin silicone molds at the dollar tree and thought they’d be fun to use as play dough molds.  Madelynn ended up only using them a few times before deciding to just roll and squish her own pumpkins, but it was a nice invitation to play.

Pumpkin Letters:

  I’ve been working with Madelynn more on lowercase letters and she isn’t quite ready for writing some of them yet so I am focusing on building letters in lots of different ways.  This week we used pumpkin erasers to fill in the inside of each letter to make her name.

Halloween Letter Writing:

 For this letter writing activity I spread out fall sprinkles on a tray. We have been working on writing the first 2 letters in her name and looking at the shapes in the letters.  She is doing a great job with M, and a if I show her a model to look at.

Monster Play Dough:

Play dough alone is fun and engaging but along with lots of interesting materials it can transform into a totally new activity.  To build our monsters we used colored play dough, cut up pipe cleaners and straws, pony beads, and googly eyes.  But you could definitely add any fun things you have laying around for this activity. This was such a fun activity for the whole family! Since Madelynn loved this activity during our normal Tot School time, I pulled it out again after dinner for some more creative fun.  Even Aubrey got to squish her hands in the play dough for a few minutes (until she tried to eat it).

Glowing Ring Toss:

This game was really hard to photograph because we literally did it in our pitch black basement playroom.  All I used was a pumpkin with a good sized stem and several glow necklaces.  I had Madelynn stand back a foot or so and try to toss them onto the stem. Lots of great throwing practice!

Pumpkin Patch Pick Up:

For this game I scattered small plastic pumpkins around the room and placed a basket on one side of the room. Madelynn had to pick up each pumpkin, balance it on her head, walk to the basket, and try to drop it in without touching it.

Pumpkin Hunt:

This pumpkin hunt was all about getting some exercise! I printed out some actions and hid them inside plastic pumpkins.  Then Madelyn had to both hunt for the pumpkins, getting her to run around the house, and then do the action inside.  Tiring out this toddler is tough work!

 Ghost Knock Down:

For this gross motor activity I drew ghost faces on clear cups and stacked them in a pyramid.  Then I gave Madelynn 3 of the plastic pumpkins from the previous activity and had her throw them to try to knock down the pyramid.  After she did that for a while and watched me stack up the ghosts she decided she wanted to try that too and was happy to stack and knock down independently for a while. I love when she is able to entertain herself!

Monster Stomp Painting:

For this activity, I rolled out a large sheet of white paper on the floor and taped it in place. Then I wrapped Madelynn’s feet with bubble wrap. Then I had her step in paint and stomp on the paper to pop bubbles and make tracks. She had fun making a WHOLE lot of noise with this one!

Halloween Snacks:

Jack O’ Lantern Quesadilla – Use a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to cut 2 tortillas into pumpkin shapes. Sprinkle cheese on one tortilla. Use a knife to cut out shapes for the eyes, nose, and mouth on the other tortilla & place on top. Microwave for 20 seconds.

 Pumpkin Krispies Treats – Heat butter and marshmallows in microwave on high for 3 minutes. Stir after 2 minutes. Add cereal & orange coloring. Stir until well coated. Using cooking spray or wax paper, mold into small balls. Cool on wax paper. Add a green leaf with icing. Place mini Reese’s cup on top.

 Ghost String Cheese – Use a black sharpie to draw a ghost face on the outside packaging of an individually wrapped string cheese. 

Clementine Pumpkins – Peel a clementine. Push a green Mike & Ike (or other green candy, celery, or kiwi) into the top to make a stem.  

Goldfish Jack O’ Lantern – Use goldfish crackers to build a pumpkin shape. Add a stem, eyes, nose, and mouth.

Pumpkin Theme Bin:

In this bin: Orange and black paper shreds, orange pom poms and miniature pumpkins.
I gave Madelynn a pair of plastic tongs and had her search through the bin to find all the “baby” pumpkins as she called them.

 Glowing Pumpkins:

In this bin: Waterproof LED tea lights, orange water beads, plastic pumpkins, and scoops.
I love how these lights make water beads even more exciting.  We scooped and filled the pumpkins with the beads and lights.

Pumpkin Scooping:

In this bin: Black beans, pumpkin candy
I love how simple this bin is. I just used black beans and mini candy pumpkins for Madelynn to scoop and play with. Sometimes simple sensory bins are the best!

Monster Soup:

  In this bin: Water dyed with purple food coloring, spoons, whisks, measuring cups, and googly eyes.
Madelynn is always taking out the measuring spoons and cups from the kitchen to play with so I gave her a set to use for this sensory bin to pretend she was cooking her monster soup!

Halloween Eraser Sort:

In this bin: orange ring pasta shapes, Halloween mini erasers, sorting tray, scoops
I used the dyed orange pasta from last week and changed out the “bat” pasta for Halloween erasers. Then I gave Madelynn a variety of scoops and tools along with a sorting tray to explore.

 Spider Ring Stacking:

Madelynn loved stacking, sorting (and wearing) these little spider rings. I loved that this activity was cheap and easy to set up! Start with a few blobs of play dough, stick some straws in, pour out a bag of spider rings, and let your little one explore!

Sticky Window Spider Web:

I’ve been seeing lots of sticky window and sticky wall set ups from other tot schoolers I follow so I decided to give it a shot.  Let me tell you that this was probably the most engaged I’ve seen Madelynn in any new activity we’ve tried since the first day she discovered water beads.  All you need to do for this fine motor activity is tape a sheet of contact paper sticky side out to a window or wall.  Give your little some string and small felt spiders and let them explore.  It’s like a sticker book that just keeps on giving.  We will definitely be doing more activities like this again!

Spider Web Rubbing:

This activity turned out to be a little trickier than I thought it would be but we made it work with lots of hands on help from me.  I started by creating a web with hot glue on a sheet of card stock. After that cooled I gave Madelynn a white sheet of card stock and an unwrapped black crayon to rub over top.  Well the paper slid all over and she was quickly frustrated.  I tried taping both pages together and that helped a little, but it was still a little tricky so we ended up doing the rubbing together.

 Bat Spray Painting:

I started out by taping 2 bat cut outs onto black construction paper. (Make sure to really tape down all the edges so the paint doesn’t sneak in!) Then I taped that to a plastic table cloth I hung on the wall. Next I filled a spray bottle with white paint mixed with a little bit of water to thin it out just enough to spray and not clog our spray bottle.Then Madelynn sprayed and sprayed to her heart’s content until the outline of each bat was sufficiently covered. After the paint dried I pulled off the bat cut outs and we were left with a pretty “Bats at Night” art piece.

Bat Bead Bracelet:

I found these cute bat beads at the craft store and added a few Halloween colored beads to the mix for Madelynn to use.  I taped a piece of elastic to our tray for Madelynn to thread the beads on to and she created this cute little bracelet to wear for Halloween.

Spider Web Balance:

This was such a fun activity for a variety of gross motor practice.  I started with white electrical tape and created a web on the floor.  Then I asked Madelynn to balance on each line to cross the web. After she did this a few times, she got down on the ground and pretended to be a spider crawling on her web.  Then we practiced hopping on one foot, jumping, sliding and rolling on the web.

Spider Web Toss:

  For this throwing game, I took some fake cobweb material and strung it across our staircase.  Then I gave Madelynn some glittery plastic spiders to throw.  The web is so sticky that even if the spiders barely touched it they stuck, so it was easy for Madelynn to feel successful.

Pin the Spider on the Web:

For this activity, I started with a felt web decoration I found at the dollar store.  Next, I blindfolded Madelynn. Then I gave her a felt spider and spun her around a few times.  And just like the classic party game, she tried to make her way over to the web to get the spider in the center of the web.

 Spider Web Obstacle Course:

While Madelynn was sleeping I used white streamers and created a huge spider web in our dining room. I choose to make it there because the chairs were really useful for making the web zig zag up and down and all over the room. I told Madelynn that she was a bug that had to fly through the web without getting stuck or the spider would eat her. Honestly Madelynn thought this game was fun, but actually enjoyed tearing the streamers down more than crawling through them.

 Bat Hopscotch:

This game would work indoors or out but it was pretty rainy outside so we opted for the indoor version. First, I used washi tape to lay out a hopscotch game on the floor. Then I taped bat cut outs with the numbers 1-10 written on them inside each box.  If you are playing outside you could use sidewalk chalk to make your hopscotch board.  Then Madelynn practiced jumping and counting up and down the board all afternoon.

Bat & Spider Snacks:

 Fruit Spider Snack:  Use a toothpick to attach 2 grapes together. Thread raisins onto 8 toothpicks to make legs. Push legs into the spider body.

Spider Snack: Lay pretzels out on a plate and drizzle melted white chocolate to connect the pieces in a web formation. Add spider sprinkles before chocolate sets. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or so until chocolate hardens.

Apple and Peanut Butter Sandwich Spiders: Slice apples into circles. Spread with peanut butter and sandwich together.  Stick 8 pretzel sticks between the apples for legs.  Use a dab of peanut butter to attach 2 candy eyes.

Bat Snack: Fill a snack baggie with Halloween themed grape gummies. Glue googly eyes to a clothespin and draw a mouth. Clip to the center of the bag.

Chocolate Bat Snack: Start with a chocolate HoHo in the middle.  Break apart chocolate bars for the wings.  Use a Hershey kiss for the head, add mini chocolate chips for ears, and candy eyes to finish off the face.

 Spider Web Sensory Bin:

In this bin: fake cobweb material and glittery plastic spiders Our first sensory bin this week was made with the same web we used for the spider toss game. Getting the spiders unstuck from the web was quite the challenge and great for building those little hand muscles.

Spider Ice Sensory Play:

  In this bin: shaving cream and ice spiders
This activity was really messy but a lot of fun for Madelynn. I spread some shaving cream webs out on our tray and then added black ice spiders that I made using a spider shaped ice tray and black food coloring.

Save the Spiders:

In this bin: spider rings, yarn and gator grabber tweezers
This bin was all about fine motor practice.  I wrapped our sensory bin with yarn, then dropped the spider rings inside.  Madelynn had to rescue the spiders with her tweezers by reaching through the webs.

Bat Sensory Bin:

In this bin: orange ring and black bow tie pasta shapes
The bow tie pasta made such perfect little bats. I planned to make counting sheets for this one but ran out of time, so we just had free time with this one.

Bat Light Box:

I don’t really have an official light box, but I found these battery powered LED lights in the Target Dollar Spot so I threw them in an empty Sterilite container and put our clear IKEA tray on top and it actually worked pretty well. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to use since this was our first attempt at using a light box, so I started out with a few bat cut outs on top. When that really wasn’t holding Madelynn’s attention, I  poured our bat sensory bin on top too for her to play with. She had fun making the bats fly through the night sky and pretended to give them all eyes too.

Fall Sticker Pictures:

You can never go wrong with stickers, and they are great for fine motor practice too, especially the foam ones with the peel off backing.  These fall leaf glitter foam stickers were so pretty I gave them to Madelynn with some crayons and scissors and let her create whatever her little heart desired.

Dot Painting Fall Tree:

Painting with a q-tip takes lots of concentration and patience, both of which are great skills for Madelynn to practice.  I started by painting Madelynn’s arm with brown tempera paint and stamping it for the tree. Then she used q-tips and red, yellow and orange tempera paint to dot stamp leaves on the tree.  She got a little wild and started painting all over on the side of the page when her patience for dipping and dotting ran out, so we decided that was a leaf pile.

Tear Paper Fall Tree:

  For this project I printed a pretty black and white tree and let Madelynn tear fall colored construction paper into tiny “leaves” then glue them onto the tree. I find it is easier for her to tear the paper if I first cut it into smaller strips. If she is still frustrated then I make small tears for her as a guide then she usually does a great job pulling them apart.

Blowing Leaf Prewriting:

  Madelynn is getting more and more precise with her coloring these days and actually tries to stay within the lines a bit so I decided it was time to try some prewriting tracers with her to get ready for writing letters. I laminated some cards and got her started with some dry erase markers. She did ask for me to help her a lot so I did hand over hand writing a few times to help build up her confidence to try it herself.

Yarn Wrap Tree:

  I found this gorgeous wooden tree cut out in the dollar spot at Target (I’ve also seen similar ones at Hobby Lobby and Michaels) and knew I had to find something to do with it this week. I picked up some fall colored yarn and had Madelynn wrap the tree for a fun fall look. It was actually really challenging to help her figure out how to hold the yarn tightly while wrapping the tree.

ABC Leaf Hunt:

Madelynn was a big fan of our number apple hunt a few weeks ago, so I thought we’d give it a try with letters. I printed leaves with all of the letters A-Z and hid them around the house. She used the recording sheet and a clipboard to color each letter as she found them.  She searched for about 20 minutes and even found almost all of the letters before she was tired of the game and moved on to something else.

Indoor Leaf Raking:

  The leaves haven’t quite started to fall here yet, so we had to practice some leaf raking indoors. I scattered silk leaves around the living room and gave Madelynn her plastic rake. This kept her VERY busy! I only wish we had enough silk leaves to make a fun pile to jump in

Leaf Toss & Pick Up:

Using the same silk leaves again we had a little fun tossing and picking up the leaves as well. I gave Madelynn a small basket to collect the leaves which she thought was perfect for dumping over her head too.

 Leaf Balance Transfer:

Using those silk leaves again I set up 2 baskets on either side of a washi tape “balance beam.” Madelynn’s job was to get all the leaves from one basket to the other by balancing them on her head.  She tried walking fast, slow, and even tiptoeing on the line.

 Leaf Catch:

  Using the silk leaves one more time, we played catch. I tossed handfuls of leaves in the air and Madelynn tried to catch as many as she could. We counted how many she caught and tried to beat her number each time.

Fall Theme Snacks:

Fall Krispy Treats – First follow the classic Rice Krispy Treat recipe. Add fall colored sprinkles and use leaf and acorn cookie cutters to make fun shapes.

Fall Tree Snack –  Use large pretzel rods and small pretzel sticks laid out on a plate to make a tree.  Add Apple Jacks cereal for fall colored leaves to the top of the tree.  

Fall Muddy Buddies – Follow the regular Muddy Buddy recipe you find on the Chex box and then add fall colored goodies to sweeten it up even more.  I used Reese’s pieces, mini Reese’s cups, and peanut butter chips, because you can never have too much peanut butter!   Fall Snack Mix – In this mix we used Cheerios, Kix cereal, dried cranberries, peanuts, cashews, and Reese’s pieces.

Fall Slime:

Making slime is so much fun, if you’ve never tried it you are missing out! Here is the recipe I use to make our slime: First, dissolve 1 tsp of borax powder into 1 cup of water. Next in another bowl measure out about 1/2 cup of clear glue and mix with 1/2 cup of water until well mixed. Then pour the glue/water mixture into borax/water mixture. (If you are adding color add it to the water borax mixture before combining the two) Last, get messy! That’s right use your hand to mix it all together It will start out clumpy but will come together as you mix. There will be water left over that you can toss.  Let the slime sit for a few minutes in a clean bowl and it will be even more fun to play with. For our fall slime I gave Madelynn Fall Acrylic Leaf Table Scatter and let her push the pieces into the slime as well, but you could add it in before mixing or do without. Enjoy!

And here are the details of each activity:

We read Chicka Chicka 1 2 3 every day this week. Madelynn practiced counting to 20 with the numbers in the front of the book and I modeled counting to 100 in the back of the book. We also played “find that number” on these pages. I named a number and she searched the page to find it.

Chicka Chicka 123 Felt Board:

After we read Chicka Chicka 1 2 3, we used felt numbers and an apple tree to retell the story. I found the numbers in the dollar section at target and printed the apple tree out. You can find printable versions of these here.

Snip & Glue Apple Tree:

Similar to last week’s tree craft we started with pre-cut trunk and treetop pieces. Madelynn glued each to a large sheet of paper.  Then I gave her strips of red paper to snip into apples. She glued the pieces onto the treetop and added number stickers.

Sort and Count Bottles:

I created these bottles earlier this year for Madelynn to use to practice identifying numbers and thought this would be the perfect time to pull them back out. To make the bottles I used empty water bottles, wrapped them with a piece of colored felt and hot glued it together on the back side. Then hot glued a number cut out to the front.  Madelynn practiced counting and sorting the colored pom poms into each bottle for some great fine motor and math practice.

Peg Board Numbers:

I bought this set of Peg-It Number Boards for my classroom my very first year teaching. They are great for number recognition, counting, sorting, stacking and fine motor skills. Madelynn plays with these a lot on a daily basis so I thought it would be a great time to pull them out and really focus on the counting and number recognition.

Secret Number Painting:

Have you ever used a white crayon on Easter eggs to create designs before dying them? I used to think that was SO cool as a kid, and that’s what inspired this little activity. Madelynn loves to paint so I put together this super easy to prep secret number painting activity for her. All I did was write numbers all over a piece of paper with a white crayon and then let Madelynn paint the page with watercolors. She loved uncovering each number so much I actually had to quickly make another page so she could keep painting!

Outdoor Number Hunt:

  This outdoor number hunt was fun and super easy to set up. We used this Foam Number Puzzle Mat and I popped all the numbers out, threw them all over the yard and let Madelynn search and reassemble her puzzle.

Number Hop:

First I put on some music to dance to and then whenever I stopped the song I shouted a number and Madelynn had to find it and hop there. We used the same Foam Number Puzzle Mat from above for easy pre-made numbers.

Race & Wipe Numbers:

Last week’s race & wipe letters activity was a bit hit, so I knew we had to do it again this week with numbers. I wrote numbers all over our patio window with dry erase marker and then had Madelynn stand back a few feet. I gave her a number and she had to run over, erase it and run back.

Squirt the Number:

Fine motor and gross motor practice all rolled into one with this activity. I wrote a bunch of numbers all over the ground with sidewalk chalk and then told Madelynn which number to find and squirt with the spray bottle.

Shopping for Numbers:

I’m all about reusing the same learning tools, so I took the same numbers from our Foam Number Puzzle Mat we used above and spread them all around our house.  Then I gave Madelynn a printable number shopping list and she searched high and low to find all of the items on her list. She especially loved being able to check things off just like when we go to the grocery store.

Chicka Chicka 123 Snacks:

Coconut Tree Snack – We had so much fun making coconut trees last week that we had to squeeze just one more in  Cut apple into thin slices. Lay graham crackers a line to form the trunk. Add apple slices to the top for palm tree leaves. Sprinkle blueberries near the top for coconuts.  

Counting Apple Trees – Print and laminate apple tree counting mats. Use red M&Ms, candies, or cherries to count the corresponding number onto each tree.  

Number Cookies – Mix butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour. Preheat oven to 400 F. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes with number cookie cutters. Add sprinkles. Bake 6 to 8 minutes. Cool completely.  

Pretzel Build a Number – Use pretzel sticks to make and name numbers. Model how to form a number and have child copy it.  

Number Mac & Cheese – I found this awesome Number Mac & Cheese this week so we just had to have it for lunch one day. There is an ABC version too so I might have to go back and stock up on more to dye for sensory bins. I looked for ABC pasta last week online and it is hard to find and really expensive so buying a bunch of $1 mac and cheese would definitely be a cheaper option!

Number Puzzle Hunt:

In this bin: popcorn kernels, wooden number puzzle, gator grabber tweezers
Madelynn loved our puzzle bin last week so this week I hid the pieces to her number puzzle in a bin full of popcorn for her to hunt for.  She definitely thought this was a little more exciting than just dumping and putting the puzzle back together.

Play Dough Numbers:

You can never go wrong with play dough in our house so for this sensory activity, we used our number cookie cutters and Play Dough Tools for a little number practice.

Number Hunt:

In this bin: rainbow rice, foam numbers, and little cups  
We used this number hunt page for matching the numbers as well.

Play Dough Apple Trees:

The play dough from last week smelled so yummy we had to make an apple tree version for this week! I used packaged play dough mixed with apple pie spice for this activity.  Madelynn had mostly free play but I encouraged her to build trees and then use the number magnets to climb the trees.  

Chicka Chicka 123 Bin:

In this bin: play sand, magnet wand, play shovel and magnet numbers  
Madelynn used her magnet wand to hunt for numbers and match them to our number hunt page.

Number Water Painting:

Have you seen these Melissa & Doug Number Splash Cards? I know I posted about them last week too, but seriously you guys, these are amazing. All you do is fill the pen with water..YES WATER! for mess free painting on each card. And the best part? When they dry, the picture turns white again so they can be used over and over! We’ve had these for almost a few years and they are as good as new still. We got this Melissa & Doug Water Wow Splash Cards Bundle with Alphabet and Numbers & Colors so we have lots of options when we’re out and about. It made the perfect wrap up activity for our Chicka Chicka 1,2,3 week.

  We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom every day this week. Madelynn’s favorite part was using her princess wand to point to the letters in the big book as we sang the ABC’s at the beginning and end of the book. I love how much she learns about tracking print and letter identification from this book.

Chicka Chicka Felt Story:

We started the week with this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom felt board set. We practiced naming letters as they climbed the tree and of course shook the tree to make them all fall out.  I made the pieces for this set myself, but if you want something premade, you could use this tree with Velcro letters from Lakeshore Learning.

Snip & Stamp Coconut Tree:

  I was so impressed with Madelynn’s scissor skills last week I knew I had to keep incorporating some more practice this week. For this tree I precut the leaves and had her snip each one for a palm tree texture.  Then she glued the pieces onto a white piece of paper and stamped the letters in her name. This letter stamp set from Melissa and Doug is the perfect size and I love that it includes upper and lowercase letters.

ABC Bead Name Bracelet:

Madelynn is really doing well with identifying uppercase letters so we are starting to focus on just the lowercase letters in her name. I found these awesome Lowercase Letter Beads and wrote Madelynn’s name on a plain piece of paper. She matched a bead to each letter first and then strung them together on a pipe cleaner for an easy little bracelet.  We also had some fun just playing with the letter beads and pipe cleaners and naming each one.

Hand Print Coconut Tree:

Madelynn loves to paint, and we just don’t do enough of it these days with a baby that could wake up at any moment, but Aubrey was taking a great nap one morning this week so we got to finish this fun hand print tree with letter stickers and even had time for some free painting.

Coconut Tree Free Paint:

I was pretty impressed with the fact that her tree was recognizable, although her daddy didn’t quite understand my excitement.  If you’ve ever painted with a 2 year old I’m sure you’ll understand.

Outdoor Letter Hunt:

Since the weather is still beautiful and summer like I am trying to get us outside as much as possible. This outdoor letter hunt was fun and super easy to set up.  We used this Foam Letter Puzzle Mat and I popped all the letters out, threw them all over the yard and let Madelynn search and reassemble her puzzle. So easy and kept her busy for a LONG time.

Letter Hop:

I planned on doing this activity outside too but of course it was rainy this week so we improvised with a letter hop on the carpet.  I put on some music to dance to and then whenever I stopped the song I shouted a letter and Madelynn had to find it. We used the same Foam Letter Puzzle Mat from above for easy premade letters.

Race & Wipe Letters:

Did you know you can write on windows with dry erase markers and it will wipe right off? When I found this out I thought it was so cool so I knew Madelynn would love it.  I wrote letters all over our front windows and then had Madelynn stand back a few feet. I gave her a letter and she had to run over, erase it and run back.  She’s been requesting that I write on the windows every day since, so I’d say this was one of her favorites this week.

Squirt the Letter:

Chicka Chicka Snacks:

Coconut Tree Snack – Cut apple into thin slices. Lay pretzel rods in a straight line to form the trunk. Add apple slices to the top for palm tree leaves. Sprinkle Alpha Bits cereal letters on the plate near the tree.

Alphabet Snack Mix – Pour 1 cup of each ingredient into a large bowl and stir. Add additional ingredients such as raisins, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows etc. as desired.

Fruit Coconut Tree – Cut kiwi into thin slices. Cut banana in half lengthwise, then horizontal slices. Lay each banana half on a plate to form the trunk. Add kiwi slices to the top for palm tree leaves. Sprinkle Alpha Bits cereal letters on the plate near the tree.

Letter Cookies – Mix butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour. Preheat oven to 400 F. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes with letter cookie cutters. Add sprinkles. Bake 6 to 8 minutes. Cool completely.

Madelynn loves puzzles so I thought we would make things a little more fun with this sensory bin.  I hid the pieces to her alphabet puzzle in the bin full of black beans for Madelynn to hunt for.  She definitely thought this was a little more exciting than just dumping and putting the puzzle back together.

Play Dough Letters:

  You can never go wrong with play dough in our house so for this sensory activity, we used our letter cookie cutters and Play Dough Tools for a little letter practice.

Chicka Chicka Sensory Bin:

In this bin: play sand, mini palm trees, and magnet letters

  Madelynn used her tweezers to hunt for letters and match them to our letter hunt page.

Letter Hunt:

  In this bin: rainbow rice, foam letters, and little cups

We used the same letter hunt page again for matching our letters as well.

Coconut Play Dough Trees:

We used packaged play dough mixed with coconut extract for this activity and it smelled so yummy! I let Madelynn free play but I encouraged her to build coconut trees and then use the letter beads to climb the coconut trees.

ABC Water Painting:

  Have you seen these Melissa & Doug Alphabet Splash Cards? Yes… I know I have a serious Melissa & Doug obsession, probably second only to my Target obsession…But seriously folks these are amazing. I’m pretty sure I love painting them as much as Madelynn. All you do is fill the pen with water..YES WATER! for mess free painting on each card. An the best part? When they dry the picture turns white again so they can be used over and over! We’ve had these for almost a year and they are a staple car/restaurant/shopping cart/diaper bag toy for us. We actually got this Melissa & Doug Water Wow Splash Cards Bundle with Alphabet and Numbers & Colors so we have lots of options when we’re out and about. It made the perfect bonus activity to wrap up our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom week.

Some activities get switched around from day to day, but we try to get a mix of fine motor, gross motor, snacks, and sensory bins in each day.  If you are just getting started with tot school, be sure to read this post I wrote back in January when we started out on this adventure.

Fine Motor Apple Activities for Tot School

Ten Apples Felt Board:

  We started the week reading Ten Apples Up On Top! by Dr. Seuss and retelling/counting out the apples with felt board pieces.  I still can’t find our felt board since the big move, so we just played with the pieces on the floor. Madelynn didn’t seem to mind at all and had fun moving the pieces around while looking through the book.

Apple Magnet Maze:

Do you love Melissa & Doug toys as much as I do? Seriously I want to #buyallthethings. If you haven’t visited their website before you really need to go check it out. I have about 700 ideas for Christmas and birthday gifts just from their site. This Melissa & Doug Magnetic Number Maze was one of those things I had been wanting to check out so I finally ordered one for our apple unit. Madelynn struggled a bit to move the apples along the paths, but it was really great for fine motor practice and concentration. As she gets better at moving them, we will focus more on the counting aspect.

Apple Paint Prints:

  Painting with apples was an easy fine motor activity.  I also saw the idea a while back to cut notches in the top of the apple to make a handle for easier stamping. So smart! Madelynn had to be reminded a few times not to eat the apple but otherwise she had fun stamping, mixing colors and exploring.

Apple Tear, Cut and Glue:

Madelynn has never really used scissors before, so I fully intended this activity to turn into a tear and glue apple, but I found these ALEX Toys Little Hands Squeeze Scissors that are AMAZING! There is a little spring action that helps open the scissors back up each time. Madelynn did a great job with little snips along the strips I had cut out.

Apple Dot Stamps:

Dot stamps are always a favorite around here. We use these Do A Dot Art! Markers for lots of fine motor practice and she is getting really good at placing them in each circle. Although she does enjoy coloring the whole page with them too! I can tell this is really helping her build one to one correspondence for counting as well.

Gross Motor Apple Activities for Tot School

Apple Color Sort Race:

  Gross motor activities are always the hardest for me to plan because I need to get really creative or Madelynn isn’t all that into them.  Usually saying anything is a race is a sure fire way to get her engaged as long as I am running along side her.  For this activity I used these Learning Resources Attribute Apples, dumped them on a tray and labeled a few baskets.  We took turns running back and forth with one apple at a time and dropping it in the right basket. Super easy set up and I got a little exercise in too

Apple Size Sort Race:

We doubled up on this activity and used the same apples for sorting by size. The differences between small, medium and large apples were pretty small, so I chose to use just big and little. It was still a bit challenging and Madelynn wanted to continue to sort by color, but it was a good concept to introduce to her. We will definitely have to work on sorting by size more.

Apple Toss:

See those little apples? Yup we used them again for another game. This time I set out the baskets for Madelynn to throw the apples into.  She really just wanted to set them in so I tried to get her to stay behind the tray to throw. Either way it entertained her for a little while but not her favorite.

Apple Twister:

For this game I used mounting putty to stick apple cut outs to the floor in a 5 x 5 grid. The I called out colors for left/right hands & feet just like the classic twister game minus the twister.  Madelynn surely doesn’t know left and right yet, but it was a good way to introduce the concepts and have some slip sliding fun.

We’re Going on an Apple Hunt:

This was by far Madelynn’s favorite activity of the week.Why you ask? Because she got to use a clipboard. So funny the things that capture her attention. All I needed to do was write numbers on apples 1-10 and hide them around the house.  She hunted for them then named and colored each apple as she found it. I think I may be creating lots of variations on this one in the future!

Apple Pie Chex Mix

Apple Chips

If you have a food dehydrator these are pretty easy to make but definitely plan ahead because they took a whole day to really dry out.  Here is a little tutorial I found that includes directions for dehydrating in the oven if you don’t have a food dehydrator.  When they are done they are so sweet and delicious!

Apple Pie Bites

These are pretty much heaven on earth and I will definitely make them again. They were a little hard for Madelynn to help with, but she did get to sprinkle brown sugar and apple pie spice on each one. You can find the recipe here.

Apple Dippers

For this fun interactive snack I used a small sorting tray and filled it with peanut butter and fun toppings. Then I cut up an apple and Madelynn was happy to create her own little snack. We used peanut butter, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles and crushed nuts, but you could use all sorts of dips/toppings. Marshmallow fluff, caramel, almond butter, raisins, nuts, mini marshmallows, etc.

Apple Activities for Tot School Sensory Play

Bobbing for Apples Sensory Bin:

  We kicked off apple week with a fun water play sensory bin.  In the bin I included these fun Helping Hands Fine Motor Tools, apples from Madelynn’s kitchen play food, and fruit counters from one of the Lakeshore math centers I have from my classroom. The little cups are empty fruit cup containers that we saved because they are the perfect size for our little bins. Madelynn played for over 30 minutes with this one, definitely a success!

Apple Words Sensory Bin:

  This bin included popcorn seeds, apple magnets with letters that I wrote on them, and word cards for matching letters and learning vocabulary.  Madelynn didn’t build every word, but she did have fun digging for letters, naming them and matching them.

Apple Picking Sensory Bin:

This was a nice mess free bin.  I used all different size pom poms in red and green, a few small cardboard boxes from the dollar store, and paper trees that I made from toilet paper tubes and green cardstock.  I stuck velcro on the trees to put pom poms on for Madelynn to “pick” and put back as well.

Apple Pie Cloud Dough:

  This was definitely a messy sensory bin, so beware! I filled our sensory bin with 7 cups of flour first, then added 1 cup of vegetable oil and mix with my hands. Then I added a few sprinkles of apple pie spice for scent. Madelynn used apple counters, measuring cups and pie tins for scooping, pouring, dumping, and pretending!

Apple Pie Play Dough:

This play dough smelled so yummy! I planned on making my own play dough, then ran out of time so I used packaged play dough and added a few sprinkles of apple pie spice.  It smelled wonderful and was already colored which was a plus.  We practiced rolling little balls of play dough and squishing the on these counting trees.

Apple Picking Game:

  Last a little bonus activity we did this week was this First Orchard Cooperative Game . To play you roll the die and pick that color fruit off the tree to place in the basket. If you roll the crow, he takes one step closer to the gate. Everyone takes turns and the goal is to get all the fruit in the basket before the crow reaches the gate. It was great for practicing taking turns, color id, and funny enough how to roll a die.
