Roll and Feed Frog:

I broke out our Color Bug Catcher Game to work on number and color recognition along with some fine motor practice. Aubrey rolled the number and color dice. Then she used the gator grabbers to grab that number/color of bugs, and feed them to the frog. We continued to play until all the bugs were gone.

Letter Lily Pads:

This activity was definitely a favorite this week and we are still using it weeks later! It was really a fun way to work on letter identification and matching. First we worked together to make small balls of green play dough. Then Aubrey chose one of our letter ponds. She used letter stamps one at a time to smush the balls of play dough into letter lily pads. Last she had to match each letter lily pad to the same letter on the pond.

Pond Sponge Painting:

For our first froggy craft we created a sponge paint pond.  Aubrey used a sponge brush to stamp blue paint all over the page.  Then after we let that dry, she glued lily pads onto her pond.  Finally she used a sponge that I cut into a frog print shape to stamp green footprints all over her page.

Tear and Fill Lily Pad:

Aubrey is still working on her scissor skills so I have been trying to add in more scissor practice wherever possible. We have been using these Fiskars training scissors and they really help a lot! There is a little spring action that helps open the scissors back up each time. Aubrey did a great job with cutting little snips along the strips I had cut out. She then glued the bits on a blue piece of paper to fill a lily pad.

Tissue Plate Frog Craft:

Our last craft this week was a tissue paper plate frog.  I watered down glue so that it was easily spreadable. Aubrey used a foam brush to paint a paper plate with glue then added green tissue paper squares. Then she painted over the squares with more watered down glue. And to finish off the face she glued paper shapes to the face.

Color Frog Toss:

We started our gross motor activities off by filling a kiddie pool with blue ball pit balls for our pond. I threw in colored plastic frogs, then placed bins near the pool with color labels.  Aubrey jumped in the pool to find the frogs, then tossed them into the matching color bin.

Frog Hide and Seek:

Aubrey loves to play hide and seek, so we switched it up a little to match our theme this week with frog hide and seek.  We took turns hiding a little stuffed frog and counting to 10 before searching for our little froggy friend.

Frog Jumps:

Jumping is a great gross motor activity and really tires little ones out! For this activity I used painters tape to make 5 horizontal lines on the floor parallel to each other. Aubrey started at the first line and counted each jump as she frog jumped across. She also tried to frog jump as far as she could to see how far she could go in one jump.

Five Speckled Frogs:

Our next gross motor activity was inspired by the 5 Green and Speckled Frogs Song. We used the kiddie pool pond again and placed 5 little frogs on a wrapping paper tube “log.”  Then we sang the song and Aubrey used the pieces to act it out.  

Five Green and Speckled Frogs Song:
“Five green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs, YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool 
Then there were four green and speckled frogs.”
Repeat with 4, 3, 2, 1 frogs.

Lily Pad Leap:

This activity was a repeat from our spring theme last year, but there are so many easy ways to switch up this activity and add in different skills so I thought it couldn’t hurt to repeat it! For this fun outdoor activity, I drew lily pads (a.k.a. green Pac-man like shapes) and waves all over the ground.  Aubrey jumped from lily pad to lily pad trying not to fall in the water. Then I added letters to each lily pad and called out each one for her to jump to. You could do the same with other skills such as numbers, shapes, sight words, colors, or any other concepts you are working on.

Frog Theme Snacks:

Frog Pond Jell-O – Make a batch of blue Jell-O in small round containers. After Jell-O has set, add tootsie rolls and gummy frogs to create a pond.

Cucumber Grape Froggy – Cut two cucumber rounds for the frog head and body. Add two half circle cucumber slices for the hind legs. Add grape slices for feet and eyes.  Place candy eyes on top of the green grapes and use a food coloring pen to draw nostrils and a mouth.

Frog Pond Crackers – Spread blue frosting on graham crackers. Add tootsie rolls and gummy frogs to create a pond.

Fruit Pond – Fill a small round container with blueberries. Cut a kiwi into a small round slice. Cut out a notch to make a lily pad shape. Add the kiwi on top of the blueberries and place a gummy frog on top.

Frog on a Log – Cut celery into small sticks. Spread a celery sticks with peanut butter. Stick gummy frogs on top.

Jell-O Frog Excavation:

To prepare this fun sensory activity, I started by making 2 large packages of blue Jell-O according to the package directions.  Then before placing in the refrigerator to set, I added plastic frogs.  We waited for the Jell-O to set overnight.  Then Aubrey used spoons, scoops, and tools to rescue the frogs from the sticky pond.

String a Word Farm:

I found these little wooden farm beads a few weeks back and knew that they would be PERFECT for fine motor practice during our farm theme. I added a few word cards and alphabet beads for Madelynn to practice making words. The best part? They are a great size for our 1 year old to play with too, even if she mostly puts them in her mouth still

Wishy Washy Play Dough:

I love story inspired play, so we used an old favorite Mrs. Wishy Washy as the inspiration for this play dough tray. All you need is brown “mud” play dough, blue “water” play dough, a “tin tub” bowl, and a toy cow, pig, and duck. Madelynn also requested a brush so she could give them a good scrub.

Who’s in the Barn:

For more story inspired play, I created this “Who’s in the Barn” painting activity inspired by Who’s In the Shed? To prep, I printed a page of barns with animals inside, laminated it, then painted a thin layer of tempera paint over the animals. After the paint was completely dry I gave Madelynn water and a brush so she could uncover the animals. I see lots of possibilities for this fun activity in the future!

Milk the Cow:

I’ve been wanting to take Madelynn to a really fun kids farm in our area where you get to do a lot of hands on things like milk a real cow, but haven’t had the chance yet. So I set up our own little cow milking activity for her to try out. I mixed a tiny bit of white paint with water and poured it into a clear latex glove and closed it off with a rubber band. I drew on a few spots to make it more cow-like, then with it positioned over a cup I poked a tiny hole in the “udders” with the smallest needle I could find. We’ll see if she is brave enough to try milking a real cow when we make it to the farm soon!

Paint & Stamp Farm Art:

This masterpiece was a 3 step project. First Madelynn drew a black line across a sheet paper with a black crayon. Then she used watercolor paints to make the sky blue and the grass green. Next she painted a barn shape cut out with red tempera paint. She insisted that the barn needed a door first though so she drew that with black crayon. After both of those pages dried we glued them together and added farm animal stamps.

Farmer Says:

For this themed Simon says game, I created cards with actions based on different jobs, and called out the action for her to follow (Ex: milk a cow, gallop like a horse, roll in the mud like a pig, etc.) She still not too good about listening for the “Farmer Says” vs no “Farmer Says” but this activity was great for getting some energy out for sure!

Mrs. Wishy Washy Relay:

This game was inspired by the Mrs. Wishy Washy story. I set out a tub of mud and placed cows, ducks, and pigs inside. Then across the yard I filled another metal tub with water and a scrub brush. Madelynn ran back and forth to wash each animal.

Round up the Sheep:

This “Round up the Sheep” game was hysterical to watch. Madelynn chased balloon “sheep” around the yard, and tried to get them all back in the pen. All I did was draw a sheep face on some white balloons and set them free in the yard and we used our outdoor play pen to hold the sheep. Also great for containing rambunctious 3 year olds and their 1 year old sisters.

Farm Animal Bowling:

To play farm animal bowling I started by placing our farm animal puppets on top of upside down red solo cups and they were the perfect fit. Then I set them up and gave Madelynn a small ball to roll. Easy set up and great for getting out some toddler wiggles.

Farm Animal Ring Toss:

Farm animal ring toss (aka another way to get more play out of the same set up above!) I started by placing our farm animal puppets on top of upside down red solo cups again. Then we used paper plate rings and tried to ring each animal. This was much harder than it looks which means lots of running around to pick up the rings.

Farm Animal Ring Toss:

Cheesy Horseshoe Breadsticks – Start with a tube of refrigerated bread stick dough. Form the dough onto the pan in a horseshoe shape. Brush with butter and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Bake according to package directions.

Muddy Animals – Start with a cup of chocolate pudding. Add farm animal crackers.

Horse Cookies – Start with a Nutter Butter cookie. Use a dot of icing to attach candy eyes to the horse’s face. Attach peanuts between the cookie layers for ears. Use red and blue icing to add the details on the horses face.

Tractor Cracker – Use to graham cracker pieces to form the tractor shape. Cover with green frosting. Add chocolate donut wheels.Use pretzel rods and Chex cereal for the details.

Duck Footprints – Cut cheese slices into circles, then cut wedges out to form webbed feet. Add to round crackers.

Cut the Fruits:

  For a little scissor challenge this week I printed out a whole pile of fruit clip art images for Miss Madelynn to practice with. Most of these shapes are too hard for her to cut out exactly, but since she tends to be a bit of a perfectionist (hmmm, wonder where she got that from…) I thought it would be good for her to work on just “trying her best.” After a bit of frustration with not being able to do it perfectly, she settled in to cutting close to the lines and being happy with that. Of course our little hungry caterpillar friend was cheering her on the whole time

Hungry Caterpillar Retelling:

  I was inspired by the cute little hole punches in The Very Hungry Caterpillar and knew they would make for a great lacing activity.  I printed out clip art to match the story, hole punched them and Madelynn laced the pieces together to tell the story in order.

Dot Marker Butterflies:

Dot stampers are a great go to fine motor activity. I love how easy it is to spice up a plain old coloring page with bright beautiful dots. I printed a few of these butterfly outlines and let Madelynn design her own butterflies. Easy Peasy!

Beaded Butterfly:

Beads + pipe cleaners = amazing fine motor creations.  To create these butterflies we used 2 pipe cleaners. After Madelynn nearly filled them with beads, we twisted each side into a large oval with a little bit extra left for the antenna/body.  Then we twisted each oval in the center to create the upper and lower wing for each side.  Using the small piece of pipe cleaner in the center we added one bead on each side for a spacer and then twisted them together to connect both sides and create antennas.

Pom Pom Stamp Caterpillars:

To stamp these little cuties, I attached pom poms to clothespins, and gave Madelynn 2 small cups of paint.  We dipped, stamped and repeated all over the page to create crawly little hungry caterpillars.

Butterfly Life Cycle:

For me one of the best ways to remember something new is by acting it out, so we acted out each part of the butterfly life cycle.  We started out curling up in a little ball for the egg. Then we crawled on our tummies like caterpillars. Next, we hid in our chrysalis staying very still.  Last we emerged as  butterfly flapping our wings and flying around the room.

Feed the Hungry Caterpillar:

  For some throwing/gross motor practice, I printed a large caterpillar head and attached it to a small crate. Then I gave Madelynn another crate filled with fruits and food from The Very Hungry Caterpillar. She tried her best to throw them into the basket carnival game style, which turned out to be quite challenging!

Catch the Butterflies:

  I found this net in the Target dollar spot and knew we had to use it for some butterfly catching.  Well it was rainy and cold all week which means no butterflies to chase outside. I  improvised with some bean bag butterflies and threw them in the air for Madelynn to try to try to catch.

Butterfly Dancing:

For our butterfly dancing activity, first I tied a few of these scarves together to make colorful flowing wings. Then I put some soft classical music on and Madelynn fluttered around the room flapping her beautiful wings.

Butterfly Color Relay:

    For this activity I printed purple, pink, and yellow butterflies and scattered them around the room. Then I labeled 3 buckets with color words for sorting.  We took turns running back and forth with one butterfly at a time and sorted it into the correct bucket until all of the butterflies were caught.

Butterfly Theme Snacks:

PB & J Butterflies: Cut an Uncrustable sandwich in half for the wings, add a cheese stick in the center for the body.   Waffle Butterflies: Toast and cut a waffle in half for the base of the wings, then decorate with cut up fruit.   Grape Caterpillars: Skewer green grapes for the body, then add a strawberry for the head. Use candy eyes and raisins to make the face.
Fruit Butterflies: Slice strawberries into thin pieces. Arrange blueberries and strawberry slices into butterflies on a plate. Add small grape slivers for antennae.

Butterfly Pretzels: Dip regular shaped and stick pretzels in white candy melt, arrange in the shape of a butterfly on wax paper, add sprinkles and chocolate chips to decorate

Paper Plate Earth:

For this 2 step project, start out by painting a paper plate blue and green using different textured brushes. Then, allow the paint to dry completely. Tape the plate inside a shallow box and add a few marbles dipped in white paint. Finally, roll the marbles around on the plate to create clouds.

Recycled Trees:

I don’t know about you but we go through food pouches in this house like crazy! Which means tons of those little circle tops everywhere!! I came up with this recycled tree project for a fun way to use a few of them up. First, I cut up pieces of cardboard box into various sizes for Madelynn to use for the tree. I gave her the cardboard pieces and the green pouch tops and asked her to arrange them to make a tree. She used white glue to stick the tree pieces to a large piece of blue card stock. I used a dot of hot glue to stick the “leaves” in place after she decided where she wanted them.

Earth Dot Painting:

I love encouraging Madelynn to use different materials when we paint and create different crafts together. For this Earth painting we used a simple Earth outline and a cotton swab dipped in green and blue paint to create small dots.

Tree Sticky Window:

  After reading The Giving Tree, and talking about all of the things trees give us, we worked on this tree sticky window project. First, I taped contact paper to window, sticky side out of course. Madelynn used tissue paper squares to make the trunk and branches and added foam leaf shapes.

Truffula Tree Craft:

  I just couldn’t let Earth Day pass without reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. Afterwards we created these simple Truffula trees using small paper plates and tissue paper squares.

Foot Paint Earth:

We took advantage of the warm weather this week and moved all of our gross motor activities outside. We began by painting a large Earth. I drew a circle on poster paper, dropped a few blobs of green and blue paint and let Madelynn get messy! **Make sure to warn your littles that this can get REALLY slippery!

Clean Up the Yard:

We’ve been talking about recycling and what we can recycle vs. throw away so I created this sorting gross motor game. I printed pictures of garbage and recyclable containers and scattered them around the yard. Then I labeled small pails with trash and recycling. Madelynn ran around to pick up the cards and sort them into the correct pail.

Truffula Tree Toss:

To make the truffula trees I scrunched up large sheets of tissue paper then taped them to popsicle sticks (In the future I would definitely use longer dowels, or skewers but we didn’t have any laying around) Madelynn stood back a few feet and tried to toss small rings around each tree.

Recycled Bag Kites:

  Have you ever seen plastic bag flying around in the wind? That was the inspiration for this activity. I simply tied a string to a plastic bag and sent Madelynn running. Of course it was NOT windy at all the day we did this activity which made for lots of tiring exercise!

 Nature Walk Checklist:

  We pulled out our nature walk checklist again this week and looked for all of the wonderful things our Earth has to offer.

Earth Day Theme Snacks:

Earth Day Popcorn: Pop a bag of microwave popcorn, divide into 2 bowls. Melt blue and green candy melts (separately). Pour blue candy melt over one bowl of popcorn and green candy melt over the other. Mix well then spread both colors over wax paper to set. Break pieces apart into bite sized pieces and combine in a large bowl.
  Earth Swirl Cookies: Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe and divide the dough in half. Dye one half blue and the other half green. Grab a piece of blue dough and add a few smaller pieces of green. Blend together and bake according to the recipe.
  Tree Snack: Use pretzel rods, sticks, and halved grapes arranged on a plate to create a tree.   Fruit Earth: Start with a large rice cake. Cut up kiwi and arrange kiwi and blueberries to create an Earth.
  Truffula Tree Snack: Use the standard Rice Krispy treat recipe but replace Rice Krispies with Trix cereal. Instead of spreading in a pan, use your hands to form the mixture into balls and add a cake pop stick to the bottom to form a truffula tree.

 Green & Blue Sensory Play: 

In this sensory bin: Shaving cream, blue & green paint, and plastic animals

Recycling Sensory Bin: 

In this sensory bin: black beans, pictures of recyclables and trash

Straw Bead Necklaces:

Did you know that paper straws make perfect beads for threading? I found these straws in the Target Dollar Spot, cut them up, and pulled out a few lacing strings for some easy peasy fine motor practice.

Chalk and Tape Easter Eggs:

For this project, I taped off an egg outline with washi tape, then Madelynn dipped chalk into a cup of water, and colored each section of the egg. The wet chalk turns into a really pretty pastel watercolor texture. Some of the tape was pretty hard to get off, so I’d definitely recommend trying to limit the amount of water before it gets too messy.

Pom Pom Egg Painting:

For this open ended project I gave Madelynn pom poms clipped with clothespins and an egg outline. Using different tools to paint with always adds a little extra interest and spark of creativity.

Plastic Egg and Bunny Stamping:

I saved the paint from our pom pom paintings and pulled it back out to reuse for some stamping fun. We use cookie cutters as stamps quite a bit, so I thought a plastic egg would be a great tool to try as well. after creating a fun texture on the page Madelynn added some bunny stamps for a festive Easter themed touch.

Easter Egg Color Matching:

These cute little felt eggs were another Target dollar spot find from last year and I thought they’d make a great color matching activity. I gave Madelynn some tiny pom poms in matching colors and she used tweezers to stuff them in the correct colored eggs.

Carrot Bowling:

  How perfect are these little fillable carrots? When I saw that they had flat bottoms I just had to set up this fun bowling game. It was also a great way to practice counting how many carrots knocked down and how many still standing to build very beginning addition/subtraction knowledge.

Easter Egg Balance:

For this twist on the classic egg on a spoon relay game, I used washi tape to create different types of lines on the floor. Then Madelynn tried to follow the line and keep the egg from falling.

Easter Egg Letter Hunt:

Madelynn loves to play hide and seek so scavenger hunts are just the next best thing these days (and perfect for when I’m tired of hiding in the bathtub for the 43rd time in a row). I filled Easter eggs with lowercase letter beads, hid them around the house, and set Madelynn loose with her basket. After she found all of the eggs, she opened them up to find the surprise letters inside. Then, I gave her an uppercase alphabet page to name and match her letters to.

Easter Bunny Hop:

I know it is hard to see in the photos because Madelynn chose pastel pink tape, but for this activity I taped horizontal lines at varying distances apart on the floor. Then Madelynn started at one end of the room and tried to hop from one line to the next as I played the bunny hop song. I was exhausted just watching her! And of course we had to pull out the bunny ears, nose and whiskers

Easter Egg Actions:

  We pulled out those Easter eggs one last time for this easter egg action hunt. First I printed number/action cards, folded them and filled each egg. Next, I hid them around the house. Then I gave Madelynn her basket and set her loose. After she found each egg she opened it up and completed the number and action inside.

Easter Theme Snacks: 

Chick Crackers: Cut cheese into circles and place on round crackers. Add candy eyes, and a small piece of orange pepper to the face. Cut small slices of carrots and peppers for the feet and hair.

Fruit and Veggie Carrots: Peel and segment a clementine. Cut small piece of cucumber into a crown like shape. Arrange 2 overlapping clementine segments and one cucumber to make each carrot.

Bunny Bait: Pop one bag microwave popcorn (or make it in a pan if you’d like) let the pop corn cool for a minute while you melt about 1/4 cup white candy melt. Pour over popcorn. Add 1 bag Easter M&Ms (I prefer the peanut variety) and mix until evenly coated. Spread out on wax paper. Sprinkle pastel sprinkles on top. Allow candy to harden.  Break apart into smaller pieces then toss in a bowl with

Bunnymallows.   Easter Egg Treats: Make a batch of rice crispy treat following the classic recipe.  Cut into egg shapes with a cookie cutter.  Use sparkle gel to add decorations.

  Bunny Butts: Make your favorite batch of cinnamon rolls (from scratch, or the tube to save time like me!) add the icing, then before it hardens add a little marshmallow tail in the center and these adorable bunny feet decorations.

Paper Plate Chick:

  To make this paper plate chick, we started with watered down glue and a foam brush.  Then Madelynn painted the plate with glue and added yellow tissue paper squares. Afterwards she painted over the squares with more watered down glue and added paper cutouts to complete the chick.

Feather Cutting:

  This feather cutting activity was great for working on scissor skills.  I gave Madelynn a combination of feathers that I cut out along with others for her to cut out.  After cutting out a few feathers on her own, I showed Madelynn how to snip the edges of the feathers to give them a frayed texture.

Flower Sun Catcher:

  To make this flower sun catcher I prepped 2 sets of black construction paper outlines ahead of time.  Then I laid one set on the sticky side of a sheet on contact paper. Madelynn filled them in with tissue paper squares then added the matching set of outlines with a little glue.  I sandwiched another sheet of contact paper on top and had Madelynn help cut the extra contact paper off.  And that’s it! Easy and gorgeous window decor.

  Feed the Froggy:

  This fine motor activity turned out to be even harder than I expected.  I cut a tennis ball across the middle and glued 2 googly eyes on top to make a little froggy.  I planned to have Madelynn roll the die and then squeeze the ball to place the correct number of bead “flies” into the mouth.  The ball was REALLY hard to squeeze however so I helped her with the squeezing while she did the rolling and counting. After a bit the ball started to loosen up and was easier for little hands to squeeze.  So if you plan on doing this activity with 2-3 year olds, maybe “pre-squeeze” your froggy

Pipe Cleaner Inchworms:

These super easy inchworms kept Madelynn nice and busy.  I simply set up a tray with some wiggly pipe cleaners and beads and had her thread her own little inchworms.

Five Little Ducks:

  Our first gross motor activity was inspired by the 5 Little Ducks Song. I filled a kiddie pool with blue ball pit balls to make a pond.  Then I placed 5 little ducks pictures in the pond, and a mother duck a few feet away.  Then we sang the song and Madelynn use the pieces to act it out.  

    Five Little Ducks Song: “Five little ducks went swimming one day Over the hill and far away Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack” And only four little ducks came back!

Five Little Ducks Song: “Five little ducks went swimming one day Over the hill and far away Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack” And only four little ducks came back! . Repeat with 4, 3, 2 ducks . One little duck went swimming one day Over the hill and far away Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack” And all her five little ducks came back!”

Bird Sort Relay:

  To set up this activity, I scattered colored birds on the floor. Across the room I set up a sorting tray with colored birdhouse labels. Then Madelynn and I took turns choosing a bird and running it across the room to the matching color birdhouse.

Lily Pad Leap:

  What kid doesn’t love playing “hot lava.” You know where you can only step on certain things and not the “lava” where you burn yourself? So for this fun outdoor activity I drew lily pads (a.k.a. green pac mans) and waves all over the ground.  Then Madelynn jumped from lily pad to lily pad trying not to fall in the water.

Stomp the Bug: 

  This game was a huge hit so we recycled this activity from our Bug Theme. For stomp the bug I drew lots of shapes, added legs, antennae, and faces. Then I yelled out a shape for Madelynn to stomp. She also had fun seeing how far she could jump and if she could make it to the next bug with just one jump.

Flower Hop Memory:

  This was another favorite game from our Plant Theme. First, I drew 6 different colored flowers on the ground and had Madelynn help color them. Then, I named a color for her to jump on..”pink.” Next, I named another color to jump on, adding on to the previous color… “pink, then purple.” Finally we continued to add colors in the sequence to practice following multi step directions…”pink, then purple, then yellow, etc.”

Spring Snacks:

Fruit Flowers: Arrange strawberries, and clementines in circles, add blackberries/strawberries to the middle, and sliced cucumbers underneath for the stem

Duck Fruit Cup: Glue googly eyes, a paper cutout beak and feet to a mixed fruit cup for this easy snack to go.

Bird Nest: Mold rice crispy treats into nests using a small muffin cup, then add a few eggs candies to complete the nest.

Cucumber & Grape Froggy: Cut two cucumber rounds for the frog head and body. Add two half circle cucumber slices for the hind legs. Add grape slices for feet and eyes.  Place candy eyes on top of the green grapes and use a food coloring pen to draw nostrils and a mouth.

Rice Cake Flower: Spread cream cheese on a large rice cake, add strawberry slices for petals and pour sprinkles in the center.

Little Duck Sensory Bin: 

  In this sensory bin: water, rubber ducks, bubbles, washcloths, sponges, cups

  In this sensory bin: shredded brown construction paper, pots, pipe cleaner worms, fine motor tools, bird cut out taped to frosting container with cut out hole for mouth.

 Paper Plate Ladybugs: 

These little cuties were easy and quick to prep. I try to let Madelynn try out lots of different tools for painting including different shapes and texture brushes. First Madelynn painted the whole plate red with a foam brush. Then I gave her a circle shaped foam brush to add black spots. After letting the lady bug dry a bit, she glued on the paper shapes that I cut out to complete her ladybug.

Dot Marker Ants: 

  I whipped up these little dot marker ants for Madelynn to practice one to one correspondence and color matching.  After she stamped the spots she wanted to color in the words at the bottom of each page as well. Find the dot markers we love here.

Bug Catcher Game: 

Madelynn is just starting to understand how to take turns and play games so when I found this Color Bug Catcher Game from Learning Resources, I knew it would be a perfect quick game this week. We actually play it a lot for a family fun night activity with our other board games so I might have to grab a few more of the 10 minute games from Learning Resources. I love that they include the fine motor tools and work on basic concepts like counting, colors, shapes, letters, and more.

Fingerprint Bugs:

  Instead of stamp pads, we chose to use tempera paint to make these fingerprint bugs so that they would be bright and colorful. After stamping lots of critters, Madelynn used black colored pencil to draw legs, wings, and antennae to complete each insect.

 Build a Bug: 

I tried to leave this activity pretty open ended, so I cut out lots of different shapes and colors and let Madelynn create her own insects. When she finished she proudly told me that she made a bee, caterpillar and ladybug.

Stomp the Bug: 

  Now that it is nice out sidewalk chalk is our jam.  It’s seriously so easy for me to come up with fun movement/learning games just by drawing on the ground. For stomp the bug I drew lots of shapes, added legs, antennae, and faces. Then I yelled out a shape for Madeynn to stomp. She also had fun seeing how far she could jump and if she could make it to the next bug with just one jump.

Bop the Bugs:

  What kid doesn’t love playing the keep a balloon in the air game? If I ever need an activity to keep Madelynn busy I can count on balloons to do the job.  For this game I blew up 3 balloons then drew stripes, antennae, and faces on each one to create balloon bugs.  Then I gave Madelynn a fly swatter and she tried to hit the bugs to keep them in the air.

Swat the Number: 

We ordered these adorable fly swatters for our next 2 games, that will also probably come in handy this summer For swat the number I wrote numbers 1-12 on the ground then called out a number for Madelynn to swat. Numbers 11 and 12 were tough but it was time to add a little challenge.  I also had her try to swat all the numbers in order starting at one and counting up as she went.

 Swat the Letter: 

I am all about recycling the same activities in different ways so for swat the letter I wrote the lowercase letters in Madelynn’s name then called out a letter for her to swat. lowercase letters are a bit of a little challenge so I only included the ones in her name.  I also had her try to swat the letters in the order they are in her name.

Bee Pollination: 

After reading about bees…and watching The Bee Movie, haha, I thought it would be fun to act out the process of pollination. I started by wrapping Madelynn with tape sticky side out for her “bee stripes.” Then she tried to stick “pollen” balls from one flower bucket on her belly and transfer them to the other flower bucket across the yard. (I used painters tape because I couldn’t find our duct tape, but I would definitely suggest stronger tape so the balls don’t keep falling off. Although that did add an extra element of difficulty!)

Insect Snacks:

Ladybug fruit cup: Turn a jello fruit cup upside down. Use a sharpie to draw on spots, a head and antennae.

Ants on a log: Celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, just like my momma used to make

Dragonfly: More celery with peanut butter, add 2 pretzel wings (regular shaped would probably work better, but we use what we have around here!) and m&ms for eyes

Ladybugs: Cut strawberries in half, melt milk chocolate chips in small bag and pipe on the lady bug head and spots

Bumble bee Snack: Cut grapes in half.  Alternate rows of Kix cereal and purple grapes. Add 2 pretzel thins for wings and a mini rice cake for a head. Use pretzel sticks for antennae. Add candy eyes and draw on an icing mouth.

Sort the Color Bugs: 

In this sensory bin: Color Bugs from Bug Catcher Game, black beans, fine motor tools, paper with rainbow color dot stamps.

 Insect Hunt & Match:

I think it’s safe to say that ALL toddlers love a trip to the zoo. We are lucky to have a pretty fantastic zoo close to where we live so we take full advantage of that and visit every few weeks or so. Madelynn always loves seeing what the animals are up to, so I knew this theme would be TONS of fun!

Marshmallow Stamp Rainbow: 

  For this rainbow craft I prepared a sheet of paper ahead of time by drawing the arc guidelines for the rainbow with a pencil.   Then we used a mini marshmallow and a clothespin for our paintbrush. Madelynn dipped the marshmallow into each color of tempera paint and followed the guidelines to fill in her rainbow.  This was a great fine motor and concentration activity for her.

Color Sort & Stack: 

Who doesn’t love playing with their food? I stuck skewers into play dough and placed one Froot Loop of each color onto the skewers.  Madelynn worked hard to sort a tray full of cereal to stack a rainbow.

 Snip and Glue Shamrocks: 

We worked on our cutting skills with this Snip and Glue Shamrock. First, I printed a shamrock outline and cut strips of different shades of green paper. Then, Madelynn used her scissors to snip small pieces of paper, and glued them to fill in the shamrock.

 Sticky Window Rainbow: 

You know we love our sticky window activities over here. This week we made a rainbow with tissue paper. To prep the activity, I drew arcs on the contact paper with a pencil before peeling the backing off.  Then, I taped the contact paper sticky side out on the window for Madelynn to fill in.

Fizzy Rainbow:

This activity was super fun to watch because I didn’t tell Madelynn what was going to happen so each new color was a surprise! To prepare the activity I put a few drops of food coloring into 6 separate cups and line them up in rainbow order.  Next, I poured baking soda into each cup until the food coloring was covered (no exact measurement needed, more baking soda=more fizzy explosion.) Then I filled another cup with white vinegar, added eye droppers and set it all up on a tray for Madelynn to explore. Without any direction she knew just what to do, as soon as she started dripping vinegar into the cups they began to fizz.  As she added more each color began to show through and become brighter and brighter. Such an easy and fun way for her to explore rainbows and practice fine motor skills.

 Rainbow Ball Game: 

This game was a combination of fine and gross motor practice.  I grabbed an O-Ball, filled it with rainbow colored scarves, then we played catch. Each time she caught the ball I named a color for her to find and pull out. Then she’d toss it back and name a color for me to find.

Rainbow Bean Bag Toss: 

For this game we used rainbow bean bags and a hula hoop for a target. The goal was to throw the bean bags into the circle. Then we counted how many made it into the circle and how many landed outside.

Rainbow Relay: 

For this relay, I gave Madelynn a bowl of rainbow colored candy and a spoon.  On the other side of the room I lined up cups for each color. When I said go, Madelynn ran one color at a time across the room to sort them into the correct cups. Of course she stopped to snack on a few along the way If you don’t want a giant sugar rush you could also use Froot Loops cereal instead.

Shamrock Shuffle: 

  For this activity I printed small, medium, and large shamrocks, dumped them on the floor and labeled a 3 bins.  We took turns running back and forth with one shamrock at a time and dropping it in the right basket.

Leprechaun Leap:

To make this gross motor game a little more fun I started by cutting a beard from felt and attaching a piece of elastic to make it wearable.  Then I taped 6 lines of green tape at varying distances on the floor. I had Madelynn jump, hop on one foot, and even do a little jig from line to line to get all of her energy out.

St. Patrick’s Day Snacks:

 Fruit Rainbows – This fruit rainbow was easy and could easily be made with different variations of fruit that you have on hand. We used strawberries, clementines, bananas, kiwi, blueberries, and grapes.Lucky Charms Treats – We made these treats following the recipe for Rice Krispy treats but swapped out the cereal with Lucky Charms.  (6 cups Lucky Charms, 3 Tbsps butter, 4 cups mini marshmallows Heat butter and marshmallows in microwave for 3 minutes. Stir until smooth. Add cereal. Press into a pan.)

 St. Patrick’s Popcorn – Pop a bag of microwave popcorn. Remove any unpopped popcorn kernels. Toss in green peanut M&Ms and marshmallows. Melt vanilla candy melts according to package. Pour half of melted candy over popcorn mixture. Stir and repeat with the second half. Pour mixture onto wax paper and add sprinkles.
Graham Cracker Rainbows – Break a graham cracker in half. Spread both halves with vanilla frosting. Add a few mini marshmallows for clouds. Cut a Rainbow Airheads Xtremes in half and form an arc between the clouds.  Sprinkle frosting with blue sugar.
Licorice Rainbow – I’ve seen treat bags with these rainbow Twizzlers on Pinterest so I thought I’d make something similar for a special snack this week.  Since I didn’t want to put them in a bag, I used a skewer and pushed it through each color. After arching the licorice back through the skewer a second time, I cut the extra length off then laid it on a plate with a few marshmallows for clouds.

 St. Patrick’s Day Bin: 

In this bin: shamrock beads, green mega blocks, green table scatter, green coins, glitter shamrocks/leprechaun hats(from Hobby Lobby), and green pouch lids

St. Patrick’s Water Play: 

  In this bin: water, green food coloring, gold coins, shamrock table scatter, green and yellow bowls and cups

 Rainbow Sort Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: white beans, colored paper rectangles, colored pom poms for sorting, and tweezers

Dig for Gold Bin:

In this bin: rainbow rice, gold coins, scoops, and cups

Leprechaun Trap Building Bin:

In this bin: split peas, green magna tiles, gold coins, little people leprechaun (I used a zookeeper and added a few snips of felt with double stick tape for a hat and beard)

  I had way too many great plant books to just pick 5 for this week, so I went with a few of my favorite series.

Counting Flowers:

  To add a little counting practice to our fine motor activities this week I made these number flowers. I glued a mini cupcake liner to a stick and folded a few extra liners to create the leaves. Next I numbered the flowers from 1-10. Finally I gave Madelynn a pile of mini pom pom “pollen” to add to each flower. She counted them out one at a time as she grabbed them with the tongs.

Build a Flower:

  I am so glad Madelynn is becoming a pro with a glue stick, because I have TONS of foam shapes laying around that are not stickers. I’m not sure why I thought they were a good idea, but they are coming in handy now for art projects! I sorted out some shapes and colors into cups for her to use as flower parts. We used the book Planting a Rainbow as inspiration for building flowers.

Flower Necklaces:

  This flower bead threading activity was super easy with this Flower Power Bead Kit from Melissa & Doug. Its no secret I love all things Melissa & Doug and this kit is no exception. I love that it is made for little hands with the string that is similar to a shoelace with an extra long plastic aglet to push through the beads without it fraying.

Sticky Window Flowers:

  Something about light shining through sticky window activities just makes me smile every time.  For this flower garden, I taped up a sheet of contact paper (sticky side out), gave Madelynn a container with the leftover foam shapes from our gluing activity, and let her create away! The best thing about using foam vs. paper? It is easy to remove, reposition, and reuse the pieces!

Flower ABC Match:

  I made this little flower match activity with uppercase letters on the flower centers, and lowercase letters on petals. Then I taped the petals to mini clothespins for Madelynn to attach to the flowers.

Flower Number Hunt:

We love our scavenger hunts! First, I printed themed cards with the numbers 1-10. Next, I hid them all over the house. Then I gave Madelynn a clipboard, recording sheet and some crayons and sent her off to find the first card. We are working on number recognition, so after finding a card Madelynn would tell me the number, then color it on her paper. 
To spice things up I gave Madelynn a different action to do as she searched for her next card. My favorites? Fly like a bird, crawl like a turtle, gallop like a horse, run like a cheetah, slither like a snake, walk like a bear, tiptoe like a ballerina, and hop like a rabbit. This definitely helped to get a little extra energy out and prevented her from just slowly walking to each new card. I created different levels of response sheets to practice counting sets and writing numbers as well. Nature Walk Checklist:

We tried really hard to get outside this week, despite it being a bit cold and windy. Aubrey’s been fighting a cold, and I didn’t want to make her come out with us, so while she napped we improvised with a backyard nature walk. Madelynn was able to find most of the items on our checklist and loved finding and coloring each one.

 Seed Toss:

  For this easy game I set up a medium sized pot on one side of the room and a pile of bean bag “seeds.” Madelynn tried to toss the seeds into the pot from a few feet away. I also had her count how many she got in each time, then try to beat her score.

 Seed Letter Hunt:

  And finally we added an alphabet scavenger hunt to finish up our gross motor activities for the week. First, I printed letter seed cards with uppercase letters. Next, I hid them all over the house. Then I gave Madelynn a clipboard, recording sheet and some crayons and sent her off to find the first card. For a bit of a challenge I printed the lowercase letters on her recording sheet so she had to match upper to lowercase letters.

Plant Theme Snacks:

Fruit Flowers – We built these fruit flowers with green grapes, strawberries, pineapples, clementines, and a blackberry.
  Veggie Flowers – We built these veggie flowers from celery, cucumbers and orange peppers. I used small flower shaped fondant cutters to punch out the shapes.
  Flower Pancakes – To make these fun pancakes, I sprayed a cookie cutter with cooking spray then placed it on a preheated griddle. I poured pancake batter inside to fill the flower shape, waited 1 minute then removed the cookie cutter.  After the pancake was brown I flipped it to cook the other side. Then I topped each one with banana slices and blueberries to decorate the flowers.
  Flower Pattern Snack – I found these fun flower shaped marshmallows at Target this week so I added them in as an easy patterning snack this week.   Candy Flowers – First I melted white candy melt in the microwave. Next I laid 4 pretzels in a flower shape on waxed paper. I poured the melted candy on top of the pretzels and pushed them all in towards the center. Next I placed pink and purple M&M candy on top of the candy to make flowers.  After the candy set, I removed each flower from the waxed paper and added a green candy cane stem.

Flower Play Dough Tray:

  Play dough trays are always a hit around here. On this tray: yellow, pink, and purple play dough, pipe cleaner stems, leaf sequins, colored sequins, colored gems, and flower fondant cutters

Planting Flowers Bin:

  In this bin: black beans, fake grass, plastic/silk flowers, cups and this AWESOME flower shaped cake pop maker I found to use as a fine motor tool

Build a Garden Bin:

  In this bin: split peas and this adorable garden playset (I admit the quality on this toy isn’t the best, but it was relatively cheap and Madelynn LOVES it)

Planting Carrots Bin:

In this bin: split peas, carrot easter eggs, fine motor tools, and boxes

Dig & Play Sensory Bin: 

In this bin: dirt, pots, shovels, silk flowers, pom pom “seeds”
