Listen and Color Animals:

For our first fine motor activity we worked on coloring to fill a shape. I printed a listen and color page then played this adorable Guess the Animal Sound video I found on YouTube. Aubrey followed along and colored each animal as their sound was made.

Scented Shapes:

This activity was perfect for learning about smells! I filled small cups with different colors of powdered Jell-O. I named a shape and Aubrey used clear glue to fill it in (more advanced kiddos could also try tracing the shape outline with glue.) Then she sprinkled Jell-O power on the glue and watched as it changed colors and smelled amazing! I helped her shake off the excess powder and she repeated the process to complete each shape.

Blindfolded Building:

Next Aubrey used her sense of touch to build a structure with blocks.  She put on a blindfold and tried using Duplos to build tall towers and buildings. After she was done she removed her blindfold to see how the structure turned out.

Texture Collage:

For this open ended art activity I gathered craft materials in various textures (ex. ribbons, beads, gems, paper scraps, feathers, yarn, pom poms, sand paper, etc.) Aubrey glued materials to a large piece of cardboard to create a tactile collage. We talked about how the different materials felt as she chose where to attach each one.

Edible Tracing:

Our last fine motor activity for the week focused on our sense of taste. I printed a tracing page with various line styles. Aubrey used cereal pieces to trace the different lines then ate each one after she finished!

Listening Walk:

For our first gross motor activity we went on a listening walk. I printed a checklist page and we listened for the sounds pictured on the page. Then we colored each box as we heard the sound. 

Sniff and Match Relay:

To learn about our sense of smell, I made scent bottles for a little relay match. I first soaked 5 cotton balls in cherry, vanilla, lemon, coconut, and mint extracts, and put each one in an empty sprinkle container. Then I also poured cinnamon, cocoa powder, and coffee in 3 more containers.  (I chose to cover each bottle with paper so the color wouldn’t give away the scent.) Then I placed pictures of each scent at one end of the room and the containers at the other end.  To play, the girls had to choose one container, smell the contents then run it to the correct picture. 

Blindfolded Walk:

This activity was a fun one for my girls to do together. I had them each put a blindfold on to move without using their sense of sight. They walked slowly and listened to my directions for where to go. Then we switched roles and they practiced giving directions to me.

Guess the Shape:

Did you ever write words on your friends backs as a kid? I remember doing that with my friends all the time! This was inspired by that activity and was a nice shape review as well. I gave each of the girls a set of shape cards.  Madelynn chose one card and used her finger to draw that shape on Aubrey’s back. She tried to guess the shape using the extra shape cards to point to as a reference. Then they traded roles and repeated with each shape.

Catch the Popcorn:

For our last gross motor activity we kept it simple with a fun and yummy game of catch the popcorn. Pop a bowl of popcorn.  Take turns tossing popcorn in the air and trying to catch it in your mouth. Easy Peasy!

* You may substitute puff corn or another snack if you feel more comfortable with your little ones eating that vs. popcorn*

Five Senses Snacks:

Oreo Eyeballs: Split 2 Oreos in half. Push an M&M in the center of each one. Peel and cut small pieces of pull and peel licorice. Press licorice into the cream.

Marshmallow Mouths: Cut apples into slices. Spread one apple slice with peanut butter. Stick marshmallows into peanut butter. Spread another apple with peanut butter. Stick apple on top of the marshmallows.

Loud and Quiet Snack Sort:

Cut up snacks and place in small cupcake cups. Try each snack and listen to see if the snack sounds loud or quiet. Sort the snacks on the sorting sheet

Sniff and Guess Snacks:

Cut up snacks and put in small cups. Cover each cup with a paper towel and rubber band it to the top. Poke holes with a fork in each one. Smell each cup and try to guess what snack is inside, then open to find out.

Guess the Snacks:

Fill an empty wipe container with snacks. Reach into the container and choose a snack. Try to guess the snack by only using your sense of touch.

Match the Sound Bottles:

For a little sound science investigation, we played a match the sound guessing game. I filled 10 small bottles with 5 different items (pom poms, buttons, straws, jingle bells, beans, etc.) so that each bottle had a match. Then I covered the bottles with paper so that the contents were not visible and numbered them 1-10. Aubrey had to shake to find the bottles that sounded the same. When she thought she found a match, I helped her write the numbers, and guess what was inside. Then she opened them to find out and drew it on the response page.

Cocoa Cupcake Cloud Dough:

In this bin: flour, vegetable oil, cocoa powder, bowls, cups, silicone cupcake cups

To make this yummy chocolate scented cloud dough, fill a sensory bin with 6 cups flour, 1 cup cocoa powder, and 1 cup vegetable oil. Mix together until you reach a crumbly texture that holds its shape when packed together.

Colorful Treasure Hunt:

In this bin: black beans, colored gems, colored pom poms, and colored cups

Guess the Object:

For a little touch science investigation, we played a guess the object guessing game. I filled our sensory bin with 6 different objects. With a blindfold on, Aubrey reached into the bin to touch and feel a mystery item. She guessed what the item was and drew it. Then she took the item out to find out if she was correct and drew it again.

Jell-O Sensory Bin:

In this bin: Jell-O or Jell-O jigglers in ROYGBIV colors, cups, scoops, and fine motor tools    

I chose to make regular Jell-O for a more squishy messy experience. After each color was set, I cut them into small squares and placed them in a sensory bin in rainbow order. Aubrey used all 5 senses to explore the bin and we discussed how each sense is being used which a fun way to wrap up our 5 senses theme.

Community Sticker Play:

It’s no secret I love Melissa and Doug toys, and they are always on our birthday and Christmas wishlists. So while I was planning our community theme I knew it would be the perfect time to pull out our Vehicles and My Town reusable sticker pages. Great fine motor practice and fun pretend play.

Fire Finger Painting:

This fire finger painting activity was intentionally simple and open ended. After reading about fire fighters, I squirted a few blobs of red, orange and yellow tempera paint onto a piece of white paper. (Find our favorite paint here) Madelynn used her hands to mix the colors, make flames, and write the letter F for fire.

Band Aid Babies:

Is your little one as obsessed with band aids as mine? I’m not sure what it is but we are in a serious “every bump, bruise and mysterious ailment needs a band aid phase.” I figured what better way to indulge this interest than with some band aid play with our baby dolls.  Of course this was really a fine motor activity in disguise with lots of peeling and sticking practice.

Envelope Letter Match:

For more sticker fun, I created some envelopes with uppercase letters on them, then wrote lowercase letters on dot stickers for Madelynn to match to the correct envelope.

Community Cut Apart Puzzles:

We always need more scissor practice over here and Madelynn is getting much better at cutting straight lines. I created these community helper puzzles for her to cut apart on the dotted lines, then piece back together. This was a really good start to practice cutting on a line which we haven’t tried before.

Community Simon Says:

Although Madelynn doesn’t quite get the Simon says concept yet, (she does every action whether simon says or not…if only she’d listen to me that well!) we have been trying out several themed Simon says games. For this game I created cards with actions based on different jobs, and called out the action for her to follow (Ex: climb a ladder like a firefighter, open wide for the dentist, swim like a lifeguard, etc.)

 Put out the Fires:

  This firefighter themed activity combined both gross motor and fine motor skills. First I drew fires on the ground with sidewalk chalk. Then I gave Madelynn a spray bottle and she ran from fire to fire spraying them to put them out.  If it were warmer outside we would have pulled out the hose for some stronger spray to really wash away the fires.

Drive the City:

  First I printed out pictures of places in the community and posted them around the yard. Then I gave Madelynn a list of 3 places she needed to visit.  She hopped in her cozy coupe car and off she went to visit each location.  After she got to each place she had fun pretending to pick up cupcakes for her friends, mail letters, milk a cow and more.

Find and Match Doctor Tools:

For this gross motor activity I pulled out our Fisher Price doctor set (kind of a childhood staple right?) and traced outlines of each item on a large sheet of paper. Then I hid each item around our house and Madelynn had to find them and return them to the proper place while I took a nap helped her name each item.

Window Washing:

Not a typical job you think of when you do a community helper theme, but we happened to see some window washers downtown a few weeks ago and they captured Madelynn’s interest. I thought it would be fun to pull out some spray bottles and squeegees for Madelynn to play and pretend with.

Community Themed Snacks:

School Bus – Start with a Twinkie. Cut out a wedge from the front, slice a small piece of, then reattach to the same spot.  Use white icing to make dots for windows and to attach small red candies for tail lights.  Use a black food coloring marker to draw a line along the side under the windows. Use more white icing to attach Rolo candies for wheels.

Fire Engine – Start with two rectangle fruit strips. Cut one end to make it rounded for the front of the fire engine. Cut the other piece down and lay it on top perpendicular to the first piece.  Add a vanilla wafer cookie for the ladder, 2 chocolate donuts for wheels, red M&Ms and pull & peel candy for lights, and icing for windows and headlights.

Police Car – Stack 2 wafer cookies and a third wafer cookie cut in half to form the car body.  Attach brown M&Ms with icing for wheels, and add red and blue icing to the top for lights.

Dentist Mouth and Toothbrush – Slice a Twinkie in half lengthwise and add marshmallow teeth. Cut a thin slice of fruit strip for the toothbrush, add white and blue icing for the bristles and toothpaste.

Thermometers – Melt White candy melt in the microwave. Dip pretzel dipping sticks in the white candy and place on waxed paper to set.  Melt red (or pink) candy melt in the microwave in a decorator bag or melt first then pour into a plastic bag and cut off the tip.  Pipe lines on the pretzel to make thermometers.

  And here are the details of each activity:

  I have these little Nursery Rhyme Readers from my classroom that I knew would be perfect for Madelynn. I love them because they have simple picture cues, and have just one nursery rhyme per book.  Madelynn is starting to realize that the words on the page have meaning too, so these books are great for first attempts at pointing to print.

Hickory Dickory Clock Craft:

  After reading Hickory Dickory Dock, we made our own simple clocks. I prepared a paper plate with clock hands, and wrote numbers 1-12 on strips of paper.  Madelynn first cut the numbers apart, then glued them in order around the clock.  We focused mainly on number recognition and number order not on telling time, although Madelynn did have fun playing with the clock hands too.

Musical Clock Game:

  We continued the clock theme with this gross motor game. I printed the numbers 1-12 on cards with pictures of exercises on the reverse side.  We sang the Hickory Dickory Dock rhyme together and when we finished Madelynn stopped and named the number she landed on. Then she flipped it over to see what exercise she needed to do.

Clock Quesadilla:

For our Hickory Dickory Dock themed snack, we made a quesadilla into a clock with cut up cheese arrows and raisins.

Hickory Dickory Dock Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: rainbow rice, Melissa & Doug Clock Puzzle, felt mouse, tongs

DIY Rain Stick:

  After reading It’s Raining, It’s Pouring we made our own rain stick. To create a more realistic sounding rain stick, I first took a piece of aluminum foil and crunched and twisted it into a spiral like a spring and fit it inside a paper towel tube. Then Madelynn helped to tape one end shut, add rice, then tape the other side shut.  Afterwards she decorated the tube with washi tape before playing with it on her own.

Puddle Jumping:

We didn’t have any rain this week to make real puddles, so I made pretend puddles from blue cardstock. Then we grabbed rain boots and had fun pretending to puddle jump indoors.

Umbrella Snack:

  For our It’s Raining It’s Pouring themed snack, we made an umbrella. I used a clementine, Twizzlers pull and peel and blue M&M’s to create this snack.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: water, blue food coloring, plastic bed, little people boy, eyedroppers

Sheep Sticky Window:

Sticky window activities are our new favorite! Something about the activity being vertical with the light shining through just makes it more engaging for Madelynn. After reading Mary Had a Little Lamb we made our own sheep. I drew a sheep body on the contact paper with sharpie before taking off the backing.  Then I taped the contact paper sticky side out to the window.  I cut out a head for Madelynn to add along with cotton balls for wool.

Wool Round Up:

  For this activity I made a large square from washi tape on the floor, then spread mini marshmallows around it. Madelynn used a straw and scooted around on the floor to blow all the marshmallows into the box.

Sheep Graham Snack:

  For our Mary Had a Little Lamb themed snack, we made a sheep graham cracker with cream cheese, mini marshmallows, raisins and candy eyes.

Mary Had a Little Lamb Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: split peas, Little People Tractor, fence, sheep and girl

Piggy Plate Painting:

  After reading This Little Piggy we painted a paper plate pink, then glued on construction paper pieces to create a little piggy face.

Paint with your Piggies:

  This was by far a huge favorite of Madelynn’s.  I spread out a roll of paper on the floor and taped it down.  Next, I added a few squirts of paint spread out over the paper.  Then, Madelynn used her toes to squish, print and explore.  Beware this gets REALLY slippery so I ended up holding her hands most of the time so she didn’t keep falling.

Piggy Bagel Snack:

  For our This Little Piggy themed snack, we made a piggy bagel using pink cream cheese, a jumbo marshmallow for the nose, chocolate chips, chocolate covered raisins, and strawberries.

This Little Piggy Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: The base of this bin is “clean” mud made from ivory soap, toilet paper, and  water(I used this recipe from Happy Hooligans and then added a bit of brown paint to dye it), then I added fences and these cute little piggies.

Itsy Bitsy Retelling:

  After reading the Itsy Bitsy Spider we used felt pieces that I made to retell the rhyme. If you are looking for a set that is premade you can find one here.

 Spider Web Obstacle Course: 

To prep this activity, I wove white party streamers all throughout our dining room to create a tangled web.  Madelynn had to crawl through the web without disturbing any streamers.

Cookie Spiders:

  For our Itsy Bitsy Spider themed snack, we made this easy little spider cookie from an Oreo, pretzel  sticks, and candy eyes.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: clear water beads (rain), sun toy, plastic spiders, and a PVC pipe for the waterspout  

Shoe Print Painting:

After reading There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, we used shoes to make prints on a large roll of paper.  Madelynn had fun exploring the different prints and also spreading the paint around with each shoe.

Shoe Relay:

  This activity was meant to seriously wear Madelynn out! I filled a basket with several different pairs of shoes.  She started at the basket, searched for a matching pair of shoes, put them on, ran to the other side of the room and took them off.  Finally she ran back and started again until all pairs of shoes were moved to the other side of the room.

Cookie Shoes:

For our There was an Old Lady themed snack, we made this little shoes with nutter butter cookies and a bit of writing icing.

There Was An Old Woman Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: rice, small boot, plastic bed, Little People kids

Spider Web Painting:

  After reading Little Miss Muffet, we painted a web for the spider in the story. I prepped white paper ahead of time by drawing a web with a white crayon. Then Madelynn used watercolor paints to reveal the hidden web.

Sit on the Tuffet:

  This gross motor game was hilarious to watch! Madelynn and I said the Little Miss Muffet Rhyme while she went around the circle sitting on each “tuffet” when we finished she peeked under the last pillow to find and name the hidden shape. Fun and tiring!

PB & J Spiders:

  For our Little Miss Muffet themed snack, we made this easy spider sandwich from an Uncrustable, pretzel sticks, and M&M’s

Little Miss Muffet Sensory Bin:

  In this Bin: white beans, bowls, spoons, plastic spiders, and Little People girl

Make a Fiddle:

After reading Hey Diddle Diddle, we made our own fiddle for pretend and play.  Ahead of time, I traced and cut out a fiddle shape from 4 layers of cardboard.  Then I hot glued the layers together to make a sturdy piece for the fiddle. Next, I hot glued a paper towel tube to the end and cut a notch in the top for the “strings.” Madelynn used markers to decorate her fiddle, then stretched 4 rubber bands from the top to the bottom. Finally I gave her a chopstick to use as a bow, and she rubbed it across the rubber bands to play her fiddle.

Cow Catapult:

  Next we tried to make that silly little cow jump over the moon with this fun STEM activity.  First we built a popsicle stick catapult by stacking 10 popsicle sticks together and tightly wrapping a rubber band around both ends.  Then we placed one popsicle stick on top and one on bottom, perpendicular to the stack of 10 and wrapped a rubber band around the center to secure.  Finally, we wrapped another rubber band around one end of the 2 sticks and hot glued a spice container cap to the other end. Then I placed a moon cookie cutter on the floor and Madelynn placed a small cow toy on the catapult and tried to launch him over the moon. The best part was watching her run back and forth a million times to retrieve her cow tiring her right out

Hey Diddle Diddle Snack:

For our Hey Diddle Diddle themed snack, we made this super cute little cow jumping over the moon. First I pieced together different sized marshmallows to create a cow. I used a skewer and toothpicks to get them to stick together, but I also cut many of the pieces and used the sticky side to help hold them in place. Next I added details with broken Oreos, Twizzlers pull & peel, chocolate chips, and candy eyes.  For a moon we used a banana, and then added sprinkle stars for the night sky.

Hey Diddle Diddle Sensory Bin:

In this bin: blue aquarium rock, cat & dog (from this Melissa & Doug puzzle), Little People cow, felt “fiddle” (aka guitar because its the closest thing I could find), glow in the dark stars, dish and spoon

Little Boy Blue Sticky Window:

After reading Little Boy Blue, we used this sticky window activity to retell the story.  I drew a haystack and meadow on a sheet of contact paper before removing the backing.  Then I taped it to the window sticky side out. Madelyn used laminated pieces from the story and cut up pieces of hay to build scenes from the rhyme and retell.

Haystack Clean Up:

To prep the “hay” for this activity I cut up lots of sheets of yellow scrap paper into long strips. and crumpled them up.  I also cut up raffia and tossed that in the mix with the paper.  I spread the “hay” all around the room. Madelynn had to try to pick it all up and put it in a basket to make a “haystack” as quickly and she could.

Little Boy Blue Snack:

  For our Little Boy Blue themed snack, we made these peanut butter haystacks from All Recipes.com

Little Boy Blue Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: split peas, popcorn kernels, Little People sheep, cow, haystack and farm boy

Humpty Dumpty Play Dough:

After reading Humpty Dumpty, we made our own Humpty Dumpty with this play dough tray. I gave Madelynn various colors of play dough, an egg cookie cutter, felt clothing, sticks and googly eyes and she decided to make a little egg family.

Build a Wall for Humpty:

  For our gross motor activity we used our large blocks to build tall walls for humpty then pretended to make humpty fall down.

Humpty Dumpty Snack:

  Our Humpty Dumpty snack was one of my favorites! Stack up frosted mini wheat bricks to form a wall at the bottom of a plate. Core and cut an apple in half.  Peel the top half of the apple. Add licorice pieces for arms and legs.  Add candy eyes and a chocolate sprinkle for the mouth.

Humpty Dumpty Sensory Bin:

  In this bin: green peas, legos, plastic egg with hot glued eyes and limbs, toy horses and men

    But I muster up all the excitement I can manage for my not so favorite themes and guess what? Madelynn somehow makes me grow to love them and I love that it pushes us both a little out of our comfort zone.

Star Stamping:

Did you know cookie cutters make awesome stamps? I don’t know about you but I have tons of cookie cutters laying around for every holiday so I love pulling them out for projects.  Mini cookie cutters work best for little hands. After we were finished this page became the background for our planets.

Marble Paint Planets:

  Want a painting project without the mess? Try marble painting! First I cut out different sized circles from card stock for our planets. Next I cut the top off of one of the 9,254 Amazon boxes I had laying around (PTL for Amazon Prime, saving this moms sanity since 2013). I taped the circles in the box so they’d stay put while Miss Madelynn gently shook the box, went toddler crazy. I dipped marbles in different colored paint, and dropped them in. Madelynn was a little shake happy and we had a few flying marble incidents (thank goodness for washable paint), so if you are concerned about your spirited little ones getting too cray cray, keep the lid on and have a grand reveal after the shaking is done. We glued our planets to the star background for a fun finished product.

Sticker Star Constellations:

I thought about printing out constellation pictures for Madelynn to use as a reference, but decided to keep this project pretty open ended.  We started with adding lots of star stickers to black paper. After Madelynn was tired of stickering, we used a white piece of chalk to connect the stars.

Magnatile Rockets:

  Do you own Magnatiles? If not, I know what your kids need for their next birthday, Christmas, Valentines, or President’s day gift  They are a bit pricey but we definitely get our money’s worth out of them. We play with them almost daily and they really never lose their appeal.  This week we added a few tin cans to our Magnatile bin so we could build rockets.

Rocket Name Building:

  Now that Madelynn is getting pretty good at recognizing lowercase letters, especially the ones in her name, we are working on putting letters in her name in order. I precut a triangle, squares, and fire pieces from some Astrobrights paper. Then helped prompt Madelynn to get the letters in the right order.  Afterwards we added some more star stickers to make our project pop.

 Astronaut Training:

This was my favorite gross motor activity to date. Madelynn is getting to a really fun age where she LOVES pretend play, making forts, and obstacle courses. We combined these loves into a fun “Astronaut Training” obstacle course. First she had to crawl through a tunnel, then tiptoe through the “asteroids” (play balls from our ball pit), jump on the “moon” (pillows), then spin in our IKEA Swivel Chair and walk a straight line.

Spaceship Toss:

  Next up we decorated paper plate spaceships, and practiced throwing them to see how far they would go. I originally glued them with white glue, but they kept falling apart so we took a quick time out while I hot glued them together, and problem solved.

Reach for the Stars:

To prep the next activity I taped glow in the dark stars to the ends of streamers and hung them from the ceiling.  Then I asked Madelynn to  practice her best astronaut jumps to catch them.  Well I grossly over estimated her jumping abilities at first and had to lower all the stars, haha, but then the activity was a success. Who knew 3 year olds could only jump .2 inches off the ground?!?

Moon Rock Throw:

  To make “moon rocks” I tore a few sheets of aluminum foil and scrunched them up into balls.  Next I set out a bin a few feet away. Madelynn tried her best to throw the rocks into the bin without getting to close.

Star Search Letters:

We love our letter and number scavenger hunts over here. For this activity I printed uppercase letter stars and hid them around the house.  Then I gave Madelynn a page with all of the letters she needed to find.  Every time she found a letter she had to say the name, find it on her paper then color it in. So many great skills practiced in this activity.

 Space Theme Snacks:

Space Snack Mix – In a large bowl add a cup of each ingredient: Gerber Puffs, Multigrain Cheerios, and Kix cereal.

 Edible Constellations – Push pretzel sticks into mini marshmallows to build constellations. Use pictures for reference or come up with your own ideas. Space Jello – First make a batch of Berry Blue Jello in a clear dish, following the directions for Jello Jigglers on the box. Before putting the pan in the refrigerator add edible star glitter. Next make the “planets” by making white jello (recipe below), dying it different colors with food coloring, then pouring an inch or so into small glasses of different sizes to set. After all the Jello has set take planets out and place them on top of the blue “Space” Jello

White Jello Recipe:

Combine 2 packets of Knox unflavored gelatin with 1/2 cup COLD water and mix.
Let it set about 5 minutes, then add 1 1/2 cups boiling water and stir.
Add one 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk and mix well.

 Moon Rice Cake – Start with a large rice cake. Add sliced bananas, Multigrain Cheerios, and Kix cereal for craters and BOOM, easy moon themed snack.

 Astronaut Sensory Bin: 

  In this sensory bin: baking soda dough (baking soda, black food coloring, small amount of water, and glitter), astronauts from our Space Toob, and aluminum foil moon rocks

 Planet Sensory Bin: 

  In this sensory bin: black beans, glow in the dark planets, and glow in the dark stars.

Space Slime Sensory Bin:

  In this sensory bin: Mars Mud (because sometimes I just don’t want to fuss with making our own slime), and glow in the dark stars

 Light Table Constellations:

  In this sensory bin: light pad, clear tray, black beans, glow in the dark stars

 Fizzy Planet Sensory Bin: 

Does this bin look familiar? That’s because it is our Astronaut Bin with some vinegar!  This bin gets really messy, so be prepared to dump it all when you are finished, but it is totally worth it! Baking soda + vinegar = tons of messy fizzy fun. In this sensory bin: baking soda dough, astronauts from our Space Toob, rocks, and vinegar.

Brown Bear Mixed Media Art:

For this project I lined up scissors, glue, paper, markers, crayons and dot stampers in every color from the Brown Bear book.  Then I printed small versions of each animal for Madelynn to decorate any way she wished.

Bear Track Stamping:

To create this stamp I did my best to carve a paw shape out of a potato to create a stamper. To make it easier for Madelynn to hold I also cut a wedge out of the top of the potato on either side for the handle.  Then Madelynn used brown paint and lots of paper to stamp bear tracks galore!

Grab and Graph Bears:

I grabbed this activity from my classroom Graphing Bundle that I used with kindergarteners.  Madelynn is great with sorting so this was a perfect extension to introduce graphing.  Madelynn grabbed a big handful of colored counting bears , sorted them by color, then with my help she colored in each section of her graph.

Bear Painting:

I intended to have Madelynn practice dot stamping with a cotton swab for this painting project but she decided to use her cotton swab as a brush.  I took her lead and love how her bear looked “fuzzy” when she was all finished!

 Puffy Paint Polar Bear:

After reading Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?  we created our own version of the cover art with my favorite homemade puffy paint. (Just mix together equal parts white glue and shaving cream.) First Madelynn painted the polar bear cut out that I prepared ahead of time, then we glued it onto the blue paper. After that she added snow to the scene to complete her picture.

Brown Bear Roll & Move:

Our first gross motor activity for the week was inspired by Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? First, I created a quick die with 6 of the characters on it. Then we rolled the die and decided how each character would move. Here are the animals and actions we used: Brown Bear-bear walks, Red Bird-flap wings, Blue Horse-gallop, Green Frog-hops, Goldfish-swim on tummy, and Yellow Duck-waddle.

Bear Walk Trail:

  This was a super simple gross motor activity.  I printed and laminated a bunch of bear paw prints then taped them down to the floor to make a trail around our house. Madelynn practiced her bear walks and followed the trail.

Teddy Bear Hide and Seek:

  Madelynn recently discovered how fun it is to play hide and seek, so we switched it up a little to match our theme this week with Teddy Bear hide and seek.  We took turns hiding the bear and counting to 10 before searching for our furry friend.

 Bear Balance Relay:

For this gross motor activity, we used colored counting bears and took turns running back and forth while balancing them on a spoon. At the end we dumped them in a cup.  I set out 4 cups so that we could make it a sorting activity as well, but Madelynn wanted to see if she could fit all the bears in one cup instead.

Teddy Bear Turn Around:

I love a good song for gross motor and movement, so I had to include the classic Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear rhyme this week.  I even found this video on YouTube for Madelynn to follow along with.

Teddy Bear Snacks:

Graham Cracker Bear – Cut a jumbo marshmallow in half for mouth, then cut in quarters for the ears. Place on top of a graham cracker. Use a food coloring marker to draw a mouth. Add a chocolate covered raisin and candy eyes to complete the face
Cinnamon Bear Tracks – Separate biscuits from a tube of biscuit dough. Snip the ends to look like claws. Brush them with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake as directed
Teddy Bear Rice Cake – Spread peanut butter on a rice cake. Use banana slices for the ears and nose. Add chocolate chips and/or chocolate covered raisins for the eyes & nose. Teddy Bear Pancakes –  Make a batch of your favorite pancake batter. Make one large, one medium and 6 small pancakes. After they are finished arrange pancakes on plate in a bear shape. Melt milk chocolate and use it to pipe on a mouth and paws. Add candy eyes and a blueberry nose.   Polar Bear Paws – Slice jumbo marshmallows to make flat circles. Add mini peanut butter cups and 3 chocolate chips to create pawprints.

Brown Bear Retell Bin:

In this sensory bin: white beans, felt characters from brown bear, scoops, and cups.

 Bear Hunt Bin: 

  In this sensory bin: split peas, blue gems, trees, cotton balls, paper tube, play dough, rocks, and little people

 Bear Patterns Sensory Bin: 

In this sensory bin: water beads, colored counting bears, pattern cards, scoops, tongs, and bowls

 Hibernation Sensory Bin: 

In this sensory bin: split peas, rocks, small box caves, sticks pine cones, and bears.

Polar Bear Retell Bin:

In this sensory bin: rice, “cages” (boxes with rubber bands), and animals from Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (I used animals from our Fisher Price Alphabet Zoo)

Shape Roads:

We don’t have too many cars laying around our house with 2 little girls, so I decided to pick up this set of wooden vehicles and signs from Melissa & Doug.They were perfect for Madelynn to use to trace each of the shape roads that I made for her. You can grab a set of these shape roads here:

Alphabet Fishing:

  To go with our boat theme activities, I decided to incorporate “fishing” as a fine motor activity.  I didn’t have Madelynn use actual fishing poles, instead I let her use any of our fine motor tools to grab as many letter bead “fish” as she could.

Airplane Craft:

This craft started out with sponge painting a white paper blue for the sky. After the paint dried, I gave Madelynn paper shapes to make a plane and clouds and she glued them together.

Build Your Name Train:

To make this train, I cut out shape pieces for Madelynn to use to build her train.  We’ve been working with her name a lot so I wrote the letters on each train car and then asked her to put them in the correct order.

Transportation Reusable Stickers:

  Melissa & Doug are genius I tell you. They have the best toys for my girls and their reusable sticker pads do not disappoint.  They remind me of the original Colorform sets I used to play with as a kid.  They are more of a window cling than a sticker, so they truly are reusable and won’t end up stuck all over your floor and walls. This Vehicle Reusable Sticker Pad was perfect to pull out this week.

Stoplight Bean Bag Toss:

  This game is part gross motor, part color matching. I cut out 3 circles from red, yellow, and green colored card stock to make a stoplight.  Then I grabbed bean bags in the same colors. Madelynn and I took turns tossing the bean bags trying to get them to land on the matching color.

Goldfish Song:

  This was a bit of a stretch to go along with our theme, but the goldfish does ride a bicycle in the song, haha.  Either way we LOVE Laurie Berkner and pull up her songs on You Tube all the time for a little dance party.  This song has lots of opportunity for movement and is great for getting the wiggles out.

Airplane Song:

  Another Laurie Berkner song that we love that incorporates lots of creative movement.  If you haven’t introduced Laurie Berkner’s music to your toddler yet, you have to check out her YouTube channel, SOOO many fun songs to get your little ones up and moving!

Follow the Tracks:

  For this train themed movement activity, I taped out train tracks on the floor throughout our house using washi tape. Madelynn pretended to chug along the tracks fast and slow.

 Red Light, Green Light:

  Just like the classic game, we all played as kids, we played red light green light this week. Before we played we discussed that a red light means *STOP* and a green light means *GO*.  Then I used our card stock cut out circles as a visual reminder as I called out each command.  Madelynn loved running and freezing, and then took a turn leading the game as well.

Transportation Snacks:

Graham Cracker Stop Lights – Start with graham crackers broken into 4 rectangles. Then spread peanut butter on top and place red, yellow, and green colored m&ms down the center.

Apple/Cheese Boats –  Cut up a few apple slices and balance on the peel side on a plate. Press cheese triangles onto toothpicks and stick into the apple slices for a sail.

Banana Plane w/Marshmallow Clouds – Start with a banana sliced in half the long way and place on a plate.  Add small banana slices for wings and an apple wedge for the tail.  Use Cheerios for windows and marshmallows for clouds.

Graham Cracker Build a Train – Start with 2 graham cracker rectangles, and a square for the main body of the train.  Add Wheat Chex for the smoke stack and window. Add vanilla wafer cookies for wheels, mini marshmallows for smoke, and pretzels for tracks. Cut up Tootsie Rolls for coal and place in the train car.  

PB Jelly Car with Cucumber Wheels – Cut a PB & J uncrustable in half.  Add halved cherry tomatoes for wheels, halved baby carrots for a road, and carrot/cucumber pieces for the car windows and bumpers.

Road Theme Sensory Bin:

In this bin: black beans, cut up straws, Melissa & Doug vehicles & signs
We turned this bin into more of a tray since our bin isn’t big enough to include a lot of cars. On our tray I spread out black beans, added the cut up yellow straws for the lane dividers and then let Madelynn explore with her Melissa & Doug vehicles & signs.

Harbor Theme Sensory Bin:

In this bin: water, blue food coloring, Magnetic Boats, bath toy fish

In the Air Sensory Bin:

In this bin: Blue aquarium rocks, cotton ball clouds, and airplanes from the In The Sky TOOB.

Magnetic Towing:

  Okay one more Melissa and Doug Toy I love is this Magnetic towing game. (I swear I’m not being paid to promote them I just really love their stuff!) It’s basically magnet fishing and a puzzle all in one and requires lots of concentration, a great toy for building focus and the cars have numbers on them too for added number recognition practice.

Dinosaur Sticker Scene:

Melissa & Doug have the best toys for my girls and their reusable sticker pads do not disappoint. They remind me of the original Colorform sets I used to play with as a kid. They are more of a window cling than a sticker, so they truly are reusable and won’t end up stuck all over your floor and walls. This Dinosaur Sticker Scene was perfect to pull out this week.

 Dinosaur Dig:

Digging for fossils was fun and easy with this activity. I started out by sticking some dinosaur stickers onto our clear tot school tray. Then I covered them with sand. I gave Madelynn a paintbrush and let her “dig” away!

 Sponge Paint Dinos:

  I planned to make paper plate dinosaurs, then I found this sponge painting idea and printable templates on Learn With Play at Home. I love how cute the dinosaurs turned out. Head over to her blog to grab the templates.

Shape Dinosaurs:

These shape dinosaurs were easy to prep and make. I cut a circle out of green card stock and then cut it in half so we could make two dinosaurs. Then I gave Madelynn a pile of green foam shapes and let her glue them together to create her own little dinosaur friends.

 Dinosaur Tracks:

I know I need to be better about focusing on the process rather than the product when it comes to art, so I came up with this dinosaur track painting activity. I poured a few different colors of tempera paint on paper plates, gave Madelynn some dinosaur counters, and let her stomp tracks all over the paper.

 Dinosaur Stomp:

We LOVE Laurie Berkner in our house and watch her music videos on You Tube often. One of our favorite songs is “We Are the Dinosaurs” and Madelynn loves to march around when we listen to it. To make the song extra special this week I made dinosaur feet out of tissue boxes and colored paper for her to wear while stomping to the beat.

 Dino Egg Hunt:

  This activity was essentially an Easter egg hunt around our house, but with dinosaurs hiding inside each egg instead of Easter candy and treats. Madelynn had fun collecting and counting all of the different dinosaurs in her basket.

 Alphabet Dino Tracks:

For this game I started by cutting out dinosaur footprints from colored card stock.  I wrote a letter on each one from a-z.  I placed them in a circle and then turned on some music. When I stopped the music Madelynn had to stop and try to name the letter that she was standing on. Great for alphabet recognition and movement at the same time.

Dinosaur Action Hunt:

After reading Stomp Dinosaur Stomp By Margaret Mayo, we pulled out our eggs for another hunt activity. This time I hid the actions from the story inside each of the eggs and hid them. When Madelynn found them she had to act out each dinosaur action.

 T Rex Says:

We used the same action cards from the story again for this Simon Says type activity. Madelynn doesn’t quite get the concept yet, but we have been trying out several themed Simon says games. I picked a card and then called out the action for her to follow.

Dinosaur Snacks:

Fruit Dinosaur – Cut slices of watermelon, pineapple and strawberries. Build a dinosaur with the shapes.

Dinosaur Quesadilla – Use a dinosaur shaped cookie cutter to cut 2 tortillas into dinosaur shapes. Sprinkle cheese on one tortilla. Place the other tortilla on top. Microwave for 20 seconds.

Cheerio Volcano – Mix 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup corn syrup in pan and bring to a boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat, add 1/4 cup peanut butter and 1/4 tsp. vanilla to pan and mix until smooth. Add 1 1 1/4 cup Cheerios and mix until coated. Drop mixture onto waxed paper and mold into volcano shapes. Allow to cool then top with red icing.

Dino Dig Parfait – Layer vanilla pudding, cheerios, granola, marshmallows, and whipped cream in a clear plastic cup. Top with green icing and a plastic dinosaur.

Dinosaur Bones – Push mini marshmallows onto either end of pretzel sticks. Melt white candy melt in the microwave for 1 minute. Dip pretzel “bones” in white melt then place on waxed paper to harden.

Dinosaur Sensory Bin:

In this bin: Cloud dough (8 cups flour & 1 cup vegetable oil mixed together), plastic trees, TOOB dinosaurs, and rocks.

  Dino Egg Sensory Bin:

In this bin: Sand, plastic Easter eggs, dinosaur counters.

   Dino Fossils:

Making dinosaur fossils in play dough kept Madelynn SUPER engaged. She liked seeing all the shapes she could make with the feet, tails and bodies. We used the same TOOB dinos from our sensory bin so we would have a good variety.

Frozen Dino Eggs:

This actually turned out to be a lot more work than I had planned because little did I know most of the plastic eggs we have in our house have holes in the top and bottom… After a failed attempt at filling and freezing the eggs I taped up the bottoms and around the seam of each egg. Then I added a dinosaur counter and filled each egg with water from the top hole. I placed them in containers to freeze upright overnight.  The next morning I struggled to open each egg, so I gave Madelynn a container of warm water to bathe each egg in so I could melt them a little to open them. After freeing a few eggs, Madelynn began to excavate the dinosaurs with her play hammer, and screwdriver while I tried to save the other eggs before they completely thawed…In the future, I may just freeze them in a silicone cupcake pan. Not egg shaped, but definitely WAY easier to get them out!

Dinosaur Mud:

In this bin: chocolate “oobleck,” rocks, TOOB dinosaurs, and rocks. Start with 1 cup water in a bowl. Add 2 cups cornstarch a bit at a time and sprinkle a few spoonfuls of unsweetened cocoa powder in as well for color and scent. Stir with a spoon (or I find it’s actually easier to use your hands for this one) until you reach a gooey consistency. Add dinosaurs and rocks and explore!

Umbrella & Rain Craft:

  For this activity I cut out an umbrella and handle shape from colored paper and had Madelynn glue it together to make an umbrella. Then I filled a cup with blue liquid watercolor paint, gave her an eyedropper and let her squeeze raindrops onto her picture.  We practiced a little bit before we dropped water on the paper because she had to figure out how to squeeze gently to make drops and not a flood!

Eye Dropper Water Play:

This fine motor activity was super easy and fun for Madelynn.  I gave her colored water, a small sorting tray, a few cups and her fine motor dropper then let her just play however she wanted.  There’s something about water play that really keeps her engaged, especially when she is able to just free play and explore.

 Cloud and Rain Sun Catcher:

  Making contact paper sun catchers are super easy to do for any theme and this one turned out even cuter than I originally pictured.  To prep the activity I cut out the cloud and 3 raindrops from black card stock that I doubled up to make 2 identical sets.  I cut a small piece of contact paper and laid it on the table sticky side up. Then I stuck one set of the cutouts on the page and added cut outs for the eyes and mouth. I also set out small tissue paper squares in white and blue for Madelynn to use and let her fill in the cloud and rain drops by sorting the colors.  Separating the tissue paper squares was a bit of good fine motor practice as well as they were all stuck together from cutting. After she filled in all of the shapes, I glued the matching outlines on top of the cloud and raindrops then placed another sheet of contact paper over top to seal it. Finally I cut the excess contact paper from around the shapes and taped the raindrops to the cloud with fishing line so they would hang underneath.  A little bit more work for me in this craft but they always turn out so cute!

Dot Stamp Rainbow:

Okay so I know rainbows aren’t really weather, but after talking about rain and sun I figured we’d talk a little about rainbows too. So I made this rainbow printable and lined up the stampers in order for Madelynn to use.  I also placed a color version next to her that she could look at to see what color to use next in her rainbow.

Pony Bead Rainbow:

Threading beads on pipe cleaners takes a lot of concentration so this was a fun quiet activity for Madelynn to do.  I started with a foam floral block and added pipe cleaners for each color of the rainbow. Then I set out cups with beads in each color for Madelynn to thread onto the pipe cleaners.  I helped her with pulling out the color pipe cleaner she wanted to do and then pushed them back in afterwards. Overall pretty simple and I love the finished 3D product!

Puddle Jumping:

We didn’t have any rain this week to make real puddles, so I made pretend puddles from blue card stock. Then we grabbed rain boots and had fun pretending to puddle jump indoors.

 Rainbow Limbo:

To get Madelynn moving we played rainbow limbo. For our rainbow, I tied a string between the two columns on the sides of our dining room and tied rainbow colored scarves on so they hung almost to the floor.  Then Madelynn tried to go under (or through) the rainbow in all different ways that I called out (hopping, crawling, bear walks, etc.)

 Umbrella Bean Bag Toss:

  Madelynn still isn’t the greatest at throwing, so any time I can find a game to practice throwing is a plus. For this game I opened an umbrella and set out a pile of beanbags. Madelynn and I took turns trying to throw them into the umbrella. She really just wanted to watch me throw them, so taking turns was a good compromise.

 Rainbow Scarf Dance:

  We do a lot of dancing in our house so I decided why not add scarves into the mix? I piled up all our rainbow scarves, turned Toddler Pandora on our TV and let Madelynn go wild.  Super easy and super fun.

Weather Snacks:

Build a Sun Snack – Cut cheese slices into circles and triangles using a small round cookie cutter and a knife.  Set them out on a plate with round crackers to build suns and enjoy.

Pineapple and Carrot Sun – Core a pineapple and cut it into a round slice.  Halve carrots lengthwise and place them around the pineapple in the center.  Simple, healthy and delicious.

Cloud Jello – Make one box of berry blue Jello following the quick set method on the box. After stirring in the ice the Jello should begin to quickly thicken up.  Scoop spoonfuls into clear cups and layer with squirts of canned whipped cream for clouds. Place in refrigerator to completely set and enjoy!

Build a Rainbow –  Use a rainbow printable to sort Froot Loop cereal. This snack was great for color sorting, and gave me an excuse to eat Froot Loops for breakfast all week

Rainbow Fruit Cup – Use strawberries, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries and grapes layered in a tall clear cup to make a delicious healthy rainbow treat!

Weather Sensory Bin:

In this bin: blue rock vase filler, a toy sun, cotton ball clouds, pipe cleaner lightning bolts, blue gem rocks for raindrops, foam snowflakes, and clear round gems for hail. I gave Madelynn this bin with a variety of scoops and cups to explore.

Rain & Wind Bin:

In this bin: blue water, little people, cups, straws, and cotton balls.  Madelynn had fun squeezing the rain out of the cotton ball clouds and blowing bubbles with the straws that I gave her to make wind.

Shaving Cream Cloud Play:

All you need for this sensory activity is shaving cream and a tray.  I literally just put a bunch of shaving cream on the tray and let Madelynn squish it into clouds and play for as long as she wanted.

Rainbow Ice Play:

  In this bin: rainbow colored ice, water, fine motor tools, cups and bowls.

Weather I-Spy:

Using our first sensory bin for the week, I took pictures of each weather item and then had Madelynn search for them and sort them out. We talked about each type of weather as she found each piece.
