Well summer is winding down and here in Wisconsin most students go back to school tomorrow, Sept 1st. I tend to do LOTS of read alouds the first few weeks because it is one way that I can get my kinders to sit still for more than 2.3 seconds, and it is a great way to practice expectations in group settings. Although I have a basket of about 50+ back to school books, I thought I’d share 5 of my favorites that you may not have heard of before.

#1.What if Everybody Did That? By Colleen M. Madden

I first read this book when someone suggested it for Earth Day, which it is great for, but it is also PERFECT for back to school because of this page right here:

See all of those kids blurting out every adorably crazy little thought running through their brain? Yeah that’s pretty much what the first kindergarten read aloud looks like every year. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to a five year old why they can’t share something that is just SOOO important to them, but this book really shows students what it would be like if everyone didn’t follow the rules.

#2. The Name Jar By Yangsook Choi

Although it can be quite sad, I love the message in this story.

The main character in this book just moved to the country and has a traditional Korean name that she is bullied for and feels very ashamed. She even decides to change her name, but luckily one of her classmates discovers how special her name is and she feels encouraged enough to be proud of her name, its meaning, and where she is from.

#3. My Mouth is a Volcano By Julia Cook

Okay back to those kiddos that just HAVE to tell you every SUPER important thing and can’t bear to wait…yes this is one of the things that makes me crazy. (Not because I don’t want to listen, but because it can suck soooo much time out of your day!) Here is another super great book for addressing this problem.

I love how it really describes the feelings that Louis, and many young children get when they are so excited to share something. But then the tables turn and the sweet boy that loves to talk constantly learns that it is no fun to be interrupted when you are sharing, so he learns to respect others through listening.

#4. Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun By Maria Dismondy

This book is great for introducing the topic of bullying. Lucy is being bullied by Ralph and it is just so sad to watch her be so hurt.

She is just so sweet and always wants to do the right thing, so when her bully is in trouble instead of joining the other kids in laughing, she decides to help him. Such a great book for discussing the importance of making good decisions even when they may be very challenging.

#5. Don’t Squeal Unless It’s a BIG Deal By Jeanie Franz Ransom

Tattling…UGH! This might be one of the hardest things to explain to 5 year olds. When everything IS a big deal in their little kindergarten mind, how do you teach them when it is and isn’t okay to tell an adult.

This book puts a funny twist on tattling so the kids really enjoy it and seem to get it at least a little bit.

I love that throughout the year I can always refer back to these characters as an anchor to situations. When my lovelies aren’t being so nice I remind them how Ralph treated Lucy. When that one special friend can’t seem to control his blurting out, I remind him how Louis felt when he was interrupted. Having these shared stories to look back on really cuts down on the need for lengthy discussion to address behaviors that make me crazy, so I hope that you will find them helpful too!

The post 5 Essential Back to School Read Alouds first appeared on Mrs. Plemons' Kindergarten.

Books Teachers Love is back! We took a break for the summer but, my awesome teacher blogger friends and I have all teamed up to bring you 12 perfect read alouds each month. We will be sharing books for the upcoming month on the 15th so that you have at least 2 weeks after reading to get all your books and ideas together to try out in your room. So here we go with our top picks for September!

Everyone has their favorite back to school read alouds, and so many people use the same books. I didn’t want to pick a book that you likely already have a thousand ideas and activities planned for, so picking a book this month was really tough! I finally decided on Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell.

If you haven’t heard of this book, it is absolutely adorable and has a GREAT message so I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Molly is a quirky little first grader who is full of spunk. Thanks to her grandmother, she is proud to be unique and confident enough to handle any challenges thrown at her. It’s a perfect intro to talking about a wide range of topics such as getting to know your classmates, bullying, and building confidence.

One way I like to use this book as a get to know you activity is to have students work on a Venn Diagram comparing themselves to Molly Lou and then sharing the ways they are the same and different from her. This is my sneaky way to get students to work on compare/contrast while at the same time fitting in a getting to know you activity. There’s never enough time in the day, so anytime I can combine activities is a bonus.

Another great concept to work on with this book is character traits. Molly Lou is such an interesting little girl so there are definitely LOTS of unique character traits to discuss. Young students don’t often have great vocabulary for the traits they notice in characters yet, so I have them draw and/or write what they are thinking about the character first. For example a student might notice that Molly Lou is not afraid of bullies. We talk about words that we could use to describe that quality such as “confident,” “courageous,” or “brave.” Then we make a character trait anchor chart that we can add to throughout the year. This is great for building vocabulary and comprehension skills at the same time.

Finally, I always like to find a way to incorporate a written response. After reading this book and discussing Molly Lou’s character traits, students write about ways that they can “stand tall” like her, which is a great lead in to bucket fillers and anti-bullying programs as well.

Have you started back to school yet? Here in WI today is the first day of school for most kiddos. I am missing the classroom but loving my time home with Madelynn. We even did some fun apple activities yesterday because that’s just how things go when you’re momma is a teacher.

For those of you in full back to school mode my friends at The Elementary Entourage and I wanted to share our favorite back to school lessons, tips, ideas, and freebies to get your year off to a great start.

My first tip is really simple but such a sanity saver for me. The first few weeks of kindergarten are crazy. Many kids have never been to school and don’t really know how to function in a group setting. They are used to doing what they want, when they want to. To help keep students from getting up every 5 seconds to ask me a question or tell me they are done, I always have a stack of books on each table for students to look at. I try to include a mixture of familiar picture books, emergent readers, and alphabet book sets at the beginning to spark students interest and get them used to our “little” books.

The next thing I always have on hand during the first few weeks are name writing pages. I use this Handwriting Practice website to quickly print pages for each of my students. I like that I can differentiate the pages for students by including first/last names, tracing on each line, dots or letter outlines, and more. This website makes it so quick and easy to print new pages as needed. Because I differentiate these pages and print new ones often, I put them in clear pockets for students to use with dry erase markers. I have students keep them in their seat pockets so they can pull them out anytime they have a free minute.

And last, I think it is SUPER important to snap a first day pic of each kid. But if I don’t have it in my plans I always forget to do it… There may have been a year or 2 that I had to take these pictures on the second day of school because I didn’t plan ahead. Oops! One thing that helps is having a little sign printed ahead of time.

I made a few quick options for pre-k through fifth grade for you that you can print and use today, did I mention they’re FREE. Happy Back to School, check that off your to do list.

Because I teach kindergarten, I think it is SUPER important to snap a first day pic of each kid. These are always loved by parents especially if their morning was too crazy to take one of their own), and are perfect for the end of the year slideshow. If I don’t write it in my plans however, I always forget to do it. And lets be real 99% of the time I take them in the last 10 minutes of the day as I panic that I forgot to fit them in during all the first day routine teaching, kid wrangling, parent comforting, crazy that is the first day of K.

While we’re talking cute kid pictures…I also snap a picture of each kid for our birthday board.

I don’t print anything special for these ones, I just write the number for each kids birthday day on a dry erase board, put a crown on them and hope I didn’t miss anyone. I make small prints of each photo and display them by month on our board. It makes a cute display that’s a little more personal than just writing down their names. The kids love looking at their pictures and seeing which friends have birthdays close to theirs!

Okay so lets get into some actual teaching. Read alouds are a must the first few days because most kindergartners have sat and listened to a story before so thankfully I have attention for longer than 7 seconds. One of my newer favorites is Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale. Clark is an excited little shark that zooms into school, crashing through the classroom, and acting wild at recess. Luckily he has a great teacher that helps him contain his enthusiasm and get down to business. I use this book to introduce rules and I found this awesome freebie from Read with Me ABC. After reading the book we brainstorm rules the students think are important and then make them into a class book. Check it out here:

My next favorite read aloud has been a staple for me since my first year teaching, and I am sure most of you already have this one in your plans, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. I usually do a ton with this book including a school tour, class book, a craft, and this awesome Venn Diagram activity I found from Erin at Eberhart’s Explorers. Head over to her blog to read more and grab it for FREE!

Last, I need to get down to business and start taking some formal and informal assessments of my students’ abilities. If you teach kindergarten, you know the never ending list of concepts you assess at the beginning of the year. We are not lucky enough to have students come in before hand to get these done, and usually do not have anyone to help us with them so we have to get real creative with ways to fit them in while students are learning the first few weeks. One of the ways I get these assessments done is by using interactive emergent readers. After introducing the first one, each book follows the same pattern so students easily adapt to the routine and know what to do.

With these readers students practice cutting/glueing:

Reading words/coloring:

Tracing/writing:

Identifying letters:

And even get to sing a fun song while they learn!

These books are a great informal assessment of students fine motor skills and give me the chance to assess students one on one while they complete their books independently.

Whoa, really? It’s almost September?!?! If you are a little sad about summer ending and fall beginning, my friends from Teacher Deals and Dollar Steals and I are here to help you out with some retail therapy We’re sharing our favorite resources for September with you along with some great deals! Read on to find out more:

I wanted to share why I just LOVE my updated Kindergarten Math Centers. Are you searching for a set of centers that you can use any time of year, without having to switch out apples for snowmen, hearts for butterflies, etc.? If you don’t want the hassle of keeping up with the ever changing seasons/themes in your classroom, then check out this set of math centers with year round themes to keep your kids engaged no matter what time of year you use them. The concepts included in my number sense set are perfect for those beginning of the year skills kindergartners are working on.

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what’s included and how these centers are organized.

First up there is a teacher info sheet and an “I Can” student sheet for every center.

Next up, the centers each have 2-3 differentiation options. These may be different sets of cards, game boards, dice, response sets etc. I find this SUPER important so all kids in my class can get the most out of each center. Not every child is working at the same level, but with these centers you don’t have to think about having separate centers for students above or below grade level.

Lastly, there are math talk cards to help prompt students to talk about their learning, and rotation cards to post as a visual for your math block.

So I must confess…I haven’t cooked single meal this week… Hey I warned you last week that I don’t cook remember? Lets be real, sometimes life is crazy and this week was one of those weeks. So much on the to do list, a husband away at training, and the big WI blogger meet up this weekend means lots of take out around here for me and Miss Madelynn. But don’t worry I still have a fun recipe to share with you!

Although I don’t love cooking, I do love making cute pinteresty treats I found this adorable idea from Make Bake Celebrate and knew it would be PERFECT for our blogger meet up this weekend. If you are looking for a treat to give your students, parents, coworkers or even your own kids’ teachers, these are really easy I promise!!

Its actually pretty simple, here is all you need:

And it really didn’t take long to make them at all! It actually took longer for me to package them up than to make them.

To package them up, I put them in clear bags with green paper crinkle and a little ribbon to dress them up fro Back to School. Hopefully you love them as much as I do!

As you head back to school I wanted to share a quick little freebie and tip to help you keep track of parent communication. My school district places a huge emphasis on making positive contacts with parents. I find it is so easy to lose track of all the day to day interactions with families, so I wanted to keep track of POSITIVE contacts only. Any time I interact with parents to celebrate and tell them something awesome about their child I write it down.

There are always a few kids that I feel like I’m having so many not so fun conversations about (for behavior, academics, etc.) that they really really need to hear the positive. I really do want parents to know how much I love and care for every one of my students regardless of the challenges.

Here is the spreadsheet I created to keep track of these POSITIVE contacts that I find quick and easy to use.

I keep it on a clipboard on my desk so I can quickly add the date and code for any interactions I had that day. I find it really holds me accountable and is a great reflection on my own teaching. Grab a copy for FREE here!

Wow this summer is FLYING by! Here in Wisconsin, most teachers don’t go back to school until September, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all start <strike>stressing</strike> thinking about back to school the second we flip our calendar over to August. I’m here to share some tips and ideas for back to school/meet the teacher/open house or whatever you may call it at your school.

Tip #1 – Snacks!

I don’t know about you, but we do NOT have air conditioning in our school. Which means cramming 20 ish students and their families into my classroom in late August = one hot mess! Cooling everyone down with some beverages and filling the kiddos up with sugar usually breaks the ice and puts a smile on all of our faces.

Tip #2 – Labeled bins for student supplies

If you are lucky enough to have students bring supplies before the first day of school I recommend having a place for students to drop off any shared items. My kiddos share most supplies in the classroom so its so much easier just to have them drop them in one place so there aren’t piles all over the room. I usually store them in the drawers and cupboards you see below so having them presorted into boxes saves me TONS of time! As an added time saver I will usually ask parents to take glue sticks, pencils, dry erase markers, etc. out of the packaging so I don’t have to waste time doing it later.

Tip #3 – Information, handouts and treats at students’ seats

Being a kindergarten teacher, I usually have a short presentation at our Welcome Back Night because for many students/parents this is their first time at our school. As parents enter, they find this packet at their child’s spot which gives them instructions for what to do. After everyone leaves I can easily see which families I haven’t connected with yet because their packets will be left at their spots. And of course I can’t resist sending the kids home with a little treat

Tip #4 – Have a plan!
Okay, so I know some schools/teachers prefer to have a laid back, informal, drop in and say hi kind of welcome back night, which is GREAT! You are building relationships which is SOOO important. I’ve tried that before, but that’s just not my style. Here is usually how that goes for me…kindergarten parents enter my room looking like a deer in the headlights or they start bombarding me with 7,236 questions. The students, and usually a few smaller siblings, find every fun item in the room. They smush play dough in the carpet, color on the walls, take out 34 books and put them back in random baskets, and otherwise give this OCD teacher a heart attack. (okay so maybe its not that bad, but it’s kind of my nightmare…)

So here is my plan: answer questions before they’re asked, have parents fill out important forms before they forget, get their help with organizing and keep the kids busy and they won’t drive you cuh-razy before the school year even officially starts.

Hi friends. I’m linking up with Angie and Ashley this month to bring you ideas for your Bulletin Boards. Now I know there are so many adorable boards out there for displaying student work, but I wanted to bring you something a little different. I like my bulletin boards to be functional {and cute too} so today I want to talk about how I use my bulletin boards for student goal setting.

I know many people use and LOVE the CAFE for reading which started me off on this bulletin board goal setting journey. I used CAFE for 2 years and kept thinking there had to be something out there that was similar for writing and math, but just couldn’t find anything I loved. So I decided to create my own VOICES menu for writing and COUNT menu for math. Here is a quick peek at what the wall where I display these goals looks like at the beginning of the year. (Excuse the disaster, this was taken as I was frantically trying to get everything done for back to school night because that door was being put in over the summer and was finished just a few hours before parents arrived!)

So if you are familiar with the CAFE menu, you know that there are cards that have goals on them that students will choose from (with teacher guidance.) I created a menu and goal cards for math which I call “COUNT.” The letters stand for:

Counting and Cardinality
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Understanding Geometry
Numbers and Operations in Base ten/Fractions
Thinking about Measurement and Data

Underneath each header are goal cards based on the Common Core Standards for K-3. Student names are displayed on post its next to their goal and can easily be changed as students meet and change their goal. (To see how I have students set their own goals in kindergarten, check out my post here)

I also created a menu for writing called “VOICES” I have seen several different versions of this type off menu out there but wanted to create my own based on the Lucy Calkins writing rubrics, and the common core standards that we used. Here is a glimpse of my board during the first week of school.

And again student names are posted next to their current goal using post its. This makes it easy for me and students to reference .

It is hard to tell from these pictures, but all three boards (CAFE, COUNT, and VOICES are posted behind my small group table so they are easy to see and reference as I am teaching. I pull small groups of students with the same or similar goals so we always discuss our goal at the beginning of our small group work.

These personalized goals really make learning more meaningful to students because they feel ownership in what they are working towards and it is specific to their needs. Making even the youngest students a part of goal setting has been a powerful tool in accelerating learning and increasing motivation/engagement in my classroom, I hope you find the same to be true for your students!

If you would like any of these menus you can find them here:

I’ll share my schedule from my last year of teaching kindergarten because my schedule these days consists of whatever Madelynn’s little heart desires on any given day

This is what my schedule looked like:

Here’s a little more info about what each part of my day entailed.

AM Routines/WTW Sort
Students come in drop off their BEE Binders, make their lunch choice (which is also how I took attendance), and start their Words Their Way sort for the week.

Intervention
We have a school wide RTI time. So as grade level teams we would choose a focus and group the kids that needed help into specific groups. Students not needing help in that area would work in a larger group on enrichment activities. Because our whole school was involved we were able to have smaller groups in intervention with classroom teachers while the enrichment groups were taken by the music, art, and other non-classroom teachers. I started out with a letter naming group and just LOVED this RTI pack from Abby at the Inspired Apple:

Message/Poem

I used a morning message each day to go over basic skills and talk about the day ahead. For example each day start something like this: “Good morning kindergarteners! Today is Monday September 1, 2014. We will have PE this afternoon.” I also leave things missing such as beginning/ending sounds that we may be working on or punctuation for extra practice. Then I add additional skills practice on a rotating basis. Monday may be a question about our behavior focus for the week “How can you make someone’s day better today?” Tuesday we may practice reading our reading wall (based on No More Letter of the Week) On Wednesday we may review our sight words and letters learned so far. On Thursday We might practice ways to show 10. And on Friday, I always have students help me make a list of what we learned that week in each subject.

Our poem changes each week and is based on the theme we are studying. We use our poem to practice concepts of print and fluency, as well as a variety of other ELA skills. We work on the poem first as a class and then students work on their own copy of the poem which is great for differentiation as you can give different students different tasks very easily. (ex: Students A, B, C please go circle all of the letter b’s you can find, and students X, Y, Z please find at least 10 sight words you know) You can find the poems I use here:

And the poetry tasks we do with our poems here.

Writing Workshop

We started using Lucy Calkins New Units of Study in writing this year which I just loved because the lessons are grade specific. If you used the previous units of study you know that there was a primary and secondary version so K-2 and 3-5 had essentially the same lessons for 3 years just beefed up a bit each year. I also use my Writing VOICES menu to set goals and focus my mini lessons with students. I revamped all of my goals to match the CCSS and Lucy Calkins’ rubrics this past year

Math Calendar/Journal

I absolutely could not live without this Calendar Set by Growing Kinders. Seriously, I used to hate calendar time because it just got so monotonous for me, but this set changes every month to add more skills so it always feels fresh. I would post it on the smartboard and go through it together as a class and towards the middle of the year I began to have students lead and teach each other which spiced it up a bit more.

I also use the math journals I created for each strand of math. Students complete the journal for the day independently with a partner or a small group. The goal is to get them really thinking and talking about math in a way that makes them think critically. Often the journal has multiple means of reaching an answer and multiple possible answers. This leads to great math discussion when we have our math circle share after journal time.

Math Small Groups/Stations

I use a guided math model in which I take 3 groups each day while students choose to go to different math stations. I do not have a rotation set up where every child must go to every math station because I conference and goal set with my students based on my Math COUNT menu so they know which stations they need to go to based on their goals.

Daily 5

My literacy block is set up with the structure of the Daily 5/CAFE. I usually have 3 – 15 minute rotations in which students choose one of the Daily 5 while I meet with a small group and them conference with individual students. I created a FREE CAFE menu to math my VOICES and COUNT goal setting boards if you are looking for one for your room.

Inquiry

Our district model for science and social studies is based on the Inquiry model. We focus on comprehension and collaboration as well as student motivated choice and engagement vs. covering content. This means that we may have an inquiry unit on famous americans for example. And while I have chosen the broad topic, students will be immersed in some content to peak their interest and get them thinking, but then will choose what they would like to study. Some students may want to learn about Neil Armstrong, while others may want to learn about Rosa Parks. Students learn to conduct research and collaborate effectively with a team to collect information, and then synthesize their findings into a project. The focus is on the essential question of “What makes a person famous and why do we remember them?” This may seem crazy for kindergartners to be able to do, but the results have been amazing! I am working on creating unit resources for other teachers that teach using an Inquiry model because that was one of the most difficult things about teaching inquiry units. There is really very little out there to help organize and plan inquiry units. I’d love to know if any of you use inquiry based teaching for content so that I can get some suggestions on what you’d like to see included.

Read Aloud

Finally I end the day with a read aloud from a chapter book such as Charlotte’s Web, so that we can end our day on a relaxing note as students are preparing to go home. Students also get picked up early to go to their busses and our after school program so it is a way to have everyone ready and not just sit around for 15 minutes waiting.

Wow, that was a super long post, so if you made it this far THANK YOU for reading. I hope you may find something in there that sparks an idea for your schedule. I always love reading other peoples schedules to see how they do things because I tend to change a lot each year! So check out these other posts about schedules!
